Some minor foxing, but internally clean. Baker (1826-1869) was head of the Secret Service during the Civil War. Among his other exploits, was the capture of John Wilks Booth. This book contains some interesting commentary on spying, assassinations, and conspiracies during the Civil War. Baker’s own background, as well as the origin of the Secret Service is also discussed.

Acceptable. Bottom board is missing, front board and backstrip are detached but holding together along with the front free endpaper, a blank prelim, and the bastard title page. Remaining board shows moderate edgewear and rubbing, backstrip shows erosion at the foot and crown along with tears in the remaining joint. Former owner's name label and personal library label on front endpaper. Book block is square and solid. Minor interior foxing, text is not intact; missing last few pages, only goes up to page 702 in the appendix. Text is unmarred. A good reading or binding copy.
