Book Description
New York, NY: W. W. Norton & Company, 1979. 346 pages. Burgundy cloth hard cover, gold lettering on spine. Pictorial dust jacket, black spine, white lettering. Has been corner clipped, but the price is intact and has considerable edge wear and three small closed tears to the spine area of jacket. John Randolph of Roanoke, the notorious Virginian congressman and senator, was as reknowned for his eccentric behavior as for his unusual political positions. Famous for his bitter and brilliant oratory, he was a feared opponent whose political effect was generally reduced to the sting of his wit, although he served his constituents to their general satisfaction. By his own account and those of his friends, he was, at times, insane. He was the first American to express his disaggreement with what he saw as democratic corruption. It is the method in his madness, eccentricity as protest, that is the core of this book. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
