Description
Chapel Hill, NC: Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, A Division of Workman Publishing company, inc., New York, 1994 First edition, first printing. Dark blue cloth spine has gilt lettering. Boards are paper-covered in slightly lighter blue. Tiny stain on lower page edge (exterior). Very, very light shelf wear to board edges. Page 99 has diagonal top corner crease. DJ has very slight wear at top edge. DJ is UNclipped. Front of dj has a round promotional sticker "The book behind the movie starring Tommy Lee Jones", with a black & white picture of Jones in baseball cap filling the center of the sticker. Sticker has one small chip, as if someone started to remove it -- approximately 1mm x 2mm -- I would say not more than that is gone. A very nice clean, crisp copy. NOT a remainder. NOT ex-lib. Please do not hesitate to ask questions or request photos if you would like more information before ordering. I will combine shipping whenever possible, on request.. 1st. HC. VG+/Vg+. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
boards : Common term for the covers of a hardbound book.
DJ : Short for dust jacket, a protective and often decorative wrapper, usually made of paper which wraps around the binding of a book.
spine : The outer portion of a book which covers the actual binding. The spine usually faces outward when a book is placed on a shelf. Also known as the back.
gilt : Decorative patterns imbedded into the affected portion of a book. Often appears on the boards or the spine, and may be very simple, to elegant, to ludicrous.
8vo : Short for Octavo, A book whose page size is approximately 8-10 inches tall. The size is based on a sheet of paper 25 inches by 38 inches, the size of paper traditionally used by book printers, which has been folded and cut into 16 pages..
Unfortunately often misunderstood to mean 8 volumes.
remainder : Book(s) which are sold at a very deep discount to alleviate publisher overstock. Often, though not always, they have a remainder mark.
crisp : A term often used to indicate a book's new-like condition. Indicates that the hinges are not loosened. A book described as crisp will not have 'well-read' pages, i.e., where the book will naturally open to certain pages or sections.
Cloth : Generally refers to a hardcover with cloth covering the outside of the book covers.
shelf wear : Minor wear resulting from a book being place on, and taken from a bookshelf, especially along the bottom edge.
