ABOUT THE ARTIST: Wraithlike but boldly outlined shapes that sometimes float, sometimes stay grounded, inhabit these happy canvases by Kurt Delbanco, a German-born painter who was 89 years old at the time of the exhibition. Synthesizing Cubism, the work of Kandinsky and Surrealism, among other sources, they are playful in form and color and include still life and figural elements. Often, for all their abstract instincts, they take off from a realistic component. Born in Hamburg, Delbanco is a former refugee from Nazi Germany who eventually made his way to New York City. He was inspired by Goethe's color theory, Bauhaus abstraction and the idea of "decoration".. First Edition. Stapled Softcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8.5" x 10". Exhibition Catalog. Nazi Germany Hamburg Kandinsky Goethe Bauhaus Cubism Surrealism.
