ABOUT THE ARTIST & EXHIBITION: Patrick Mimran is a contemporary French artist and composer showing throughout Europe and represented by the Marlborough Gallery in New York City. He worked as a composer with filmmaker Peter Greenaway on 'The Pillow Book' and on the installation 'Stairs' in Geneva and a lighting project in Rome. This was Mimran's second solo show in the U.S. since his debut exhibition at Marlborough in 1996. The paintings featured were approximately 58 inches by 48 inches in size - which Mimran produced in his studio just outside Geneva, Switzerland, between 1996 and 1998. These new paintings were created using encaustic on wood panel, on which he tightly wove small geometric patterns over more muted surfaces to form patterns that convey a sense of staccato rhythms. These "visual rhythms" are key to Mimran's work where, as an accomplished musician, Mimran continues to explore what he perceives as the intrinsic relationship between visual art and music. .
