ABOUT THE ARTIST & EXHIBITION: Canadian artist François Morelli calls rubber stamp images his personal vocabulary. He creates patterns with them that both question and explore social reality. Morellis monumental ink-on-paper Carousel frieze wrapped around the interior walls of the Gallery. The work measures 80 inches high and is 137 feet long. Thematically, it explores life cycles in a futuristic, hybridized landscape. Carousel depicts a dark and foreboding view of life. Morelli draws on many influences, including current events, street life, commerce, science fiction, art history, electronic games and more. The work blends whimsy and fright into a grim snapshot of contemporary society. Morellis artistic vocabulary in Carousel is diverse, including human forms, objects and concepts. He uses rubber-stamped images of eyes, tongues, thumb prints, crawling babies, embryonic forms, anatomical drawings, baby and adult figures. He also places those elements alongside hypodermic needles, scissors, insects, fish, reptiles, cameras, currency, guns, pens, light bulbs, tree roots, telephones, skulls and crossbones, bottles, a teapot, binoculars, and various wheels of outstretched arms. Its a surreal landscape. Born in Montreal in 1953, François Morelli is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice includes drawing, sculpture and performance. . First Edition. Stapled Softcover.
