Description
Carlisle: Printed by Alexander & Phillips, 1806.. 348pp. Three quarter antique calf and marbled boards, spine gilt, leather label. Leaves tanned, contemporary ownership markings on titlepage. Old ex- lib. rubberstamp on titlepage and another leaf. Upper foredge corner of pp.329-330 torn with loss of a few words. Overall good. An interesting collection of poetry and articles, both literary and historical, including a description of Pittsburgh "and the state of society at that place" during the 1780s. The author was the father of Henry M. Brackenridge and wrote a number of notable early American literary works, most famously MODERN CHIVALRY. "Apparently privately printed" - Sabin. boards : Common term for the covers of a hardbound book.
Marbled boards : A hardcover book with a decorative, multi-colored paper on the outside covering.
spine : The outer portion of a book which covers the actual binding. The spine usually faces outward when a book is placed on a shelf. Also known as the back.
gilt : Decorative patterns imbedded into the affected portion of a book. Often appears on the boards or the spine, and may be very simple, to elegant, to ludicrous.
leaves : When used to refer to a part of a book means the book's pages.
calf : Leather binding made from calfskin. Most common form of leather binding.
