Book Description
NY: H Long & Brother. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket (As Issued). Second Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. *Very Rare* Preceding Uncle Toms Cabin by more than two decades, "Northwood" introduced a new American genre: novels about slavery. Hale is also the author of "Marys Lamb" (better known as "Mary Had a Little Lamb"). Decorative brown embossed hardcover with embossed gold gilt titles to spine; corners bumped; top and bottom of spine very mildly chipped; foxed; hinges lightly cracked; Illustrated throughout; 408 pp; Northwood is striking in that it uses the national scene as background for the story and that it deals directly with the question of slavery in 1852. Hale, a self-educated village schoolmistress, was the editor for 13 years of The Ladies Magazine and Literary Gazette (In 1834 the name was changed to American Ladies Magazine). President Lincoln was the first president to declare Thanksgiving a national holiday at the behest of Sarah Josepha Hale, who had spent 40 years writing to congressmen, lobbying five presidents, and writing countless editorials in her campaign to create an official day of thanks. . Good. 1852. Second Edition.
