London: Smith, Elder & Co, 1898. Seven-volume pocket edition of the works of the Brontë sisters, with black and white frontispieces in each volume, housed in original decorative box: "the Volumes are . . . daintily bound in cloth, with gilt top, in a gold-lettered cloth case, price 12s 6d." The set includes the poems of all three sisters, four novels by Charlotte Brontë (Jane Eyre, Shirley, Villette, and The Professor), Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë, Agnes Grey and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Brontë, and the Life of Charlotte Brontë by Elizabeth Gaskell. "Wild, strong hearts, and powerful minds, were hidden under an enforced propriety and regularity of demeanour and expression, just as their faces had been concealed by their father, under his stiff, unchanging mask." A bright nineteenth-century gift edition of some of the most beloved English novels, in near-fine condition, scarce in original publisher's box. Seven small octavo volumes, original blue-green pictorial cloth stamped in black and gilt, top edges gilt, other edges uncut. Black-and-white frontispiece in each volume. Prize bookplates from Edinburgh Ladies' College, dated 1898-1899, in Jane Eyre and Life of Charlotte Brontë. Housed in publisher's blue-green cloth box, with printed pastedown table of contents inside gilt-lettered lid: "Life & Works of Charlotte Brontë and Her Sisters." Light spotting to edges and endpapers only, a few smudges to Villette binding and label inside box lid, pinpoint spotting to top of box.
