Book Description
Ankara, Turkey: Türk Tarih Kurumu (Turkish Historical Society), 1991 Scarce. xv, 465 pp. 18 plates, map, footnotes, indices. Text in German (extensive introduction [pp. 1-119] and commentary [pp. 302-344]); documents in transliterated Middle Hittite (pp. 120-301); detailed indices (pp. 345-465). The archaeological site known as Masat-Höyük is located in the ancient northern Hittite territory bordering the Black Sea territory of the Hittite's great enemy, the Kaska. It was an important border city dominated by Hattusha (modern Bogazköy), the kingdom's administrative and military center. The 96 Middle Hittite cuneiform tablet texts which are transliterated and translated into German here were excavated from the palace archive (Building Level III) found in 1975. Dated to approximately 1400 BC in the Hittite period (a period of intense struggle between the Kaska peoples and Hittites), these texts reveal close communication with the Hittite Kings of Hattusha and describe various administrative, military and economic affairs. CONDITION: Light bumping to corners of boards. Dustjacket shows light overall rubbing and light bumping along edges. OVERSIZED.. First Edition. Hardcover. Like New/Very Good. 31 x 24 cm.
