The "I" gotist - U.S. Army ASTP, University of Wisconsin, March 1944by Various Authors
DescriptionMadison WI: Company I, 3654th S.U. ASTP of the U.S. Army, 1944 Memeographed unpublished manuscript. A very rare bit of U.S. Army history from World War II. This unit history, written and illustrated by members of Company I, 3654th S.U. ASTP at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, March of 1944. Each entry has a two to six paragraph biography of each member of the unit, including information as to where they came from (state and/or country), their language skills, etc. Perhaps most importantly, there are dozens of full-page portrait sketches of members of the unit done by the artist/illustrator Laszlo Matulay, who later acheived some fame as the illustrator of books. In addition, there are many unit photographs of the members in formation and during various duties. The front cover is a full-sized cartoon by Laszlo Matulay, depicting a U.S. soldier holding a book under his arm, and standing on and stabbing a three-headed snake with a fountain pen. Each of the heads of the snake represent one of our World War II enemies- Hitler, Musolini, and Tojo. The back of the book contains a complete unit roster. Condition: All of the pages are very tanned, with some being outright brittle with age and have several edge chips, but not affecting the text. The original staples along the spine have been removed to facilitate turning the pages without damaging them.. Soft Cover. Good. Illus. by Matulay, Laszlo. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
