London. 1875.. [6],221,[2]pp. plus six autotype plates. Original green cloth, stamped in gilt. Old blindstamp on half title, residue from library pocket on rear pastedown. Frontispiece and first signature loosening. A good plus copy. An interesting Pacific voyage, with much on the people and customs of the islands visited. Wood bought a topsail schooner at Auckland and began his voyage in 1873, stopping at Rotuma, Futuna, Savaii, Niafu, the Fijis, the New Hebrides, the Solomons, the Carolines, and the Ellice group. The autotype photographic plates are especially pleasing, and depict several of the islanders and settlements met with. "[The author] is a stout champion of the natives and deplores the destruction of their way of life by missionaries, traders, blackbirders, and other agents of 'so-called civilization'" - Toy. TOY 693. SNOW 472. TAYLOR, p.13.
