London: Printed for Henry Colburn 1819, 2nd edition. (Leatherbound) xxviii, 671pp; v, 342pp, 336pp. Fair. Printed by Nichols, Son, and Bentley of London. Second and preferred edition of Evelyn's Diary (Lowndes). In two volumes; volume II being in two parts. 4to. Bound in polished half leather over marbled boards. Half-leather edging single ruled with dots in gilt. Spine with six compartments, raised bands, bands double ruled in gilt, lettering in gilt. Gilt on spine faded. Binding worn; top cover of each volume separated, rear hinge tender; spine split on volume I, remaining secure; edges rubbed, most notably at bottom runners and corners, as expected. All edges heavily, yet evenly, foxed. Very interesting bookplates to EPs, not at all detracting from the volumes. With 12 engraved plates (2 double-paged); plates with tissue guards. Folding family tree chart at front of vol. I. Volumes foxed, most notably early and late; plates heavily foxed. With some small stamps internally, including to the plates. Plates show some foxing and two have marginal marks. Some spotting to text which is generally very clean. Some neat marginal repairs (10) and several further repairs running into text (6); no loss of text. Pages rough-cut as published. More recently rebound in half leather over marbled boards. Gilt lettering to spine (no external indication of library ownership). Binding in fine condition. A vg. ex-lib. set. The preferred second edition. Comprises Evelyn’s diary between 1641 and 1706. Also, the private correspondence between John Evelyn, King Charles I and his Secretary of State, Sir Edward Nicholas (whilst in Scotland in 1641). Three large 4tos., uniformly bound in 3/4 dark brown leather, dark blue cloth boards and red marbled end papers. Spine statese "Memoirs of John Evelyn Vol. I, II, III." Volume 1: 671pp., 6 full page engravings, one foldout map of Deptford in 1623, fine engraved frontis portrait of Evelyn. Volume 2: 320pp., 4 plates, 3/4 black leather with black cloth covered boards. Volume 2 also includes Original Letters, 336pp. Volume 3: 849 p. 4 plates. Volume 1 boards have been remounted and inner hinges reinforced. Fairly Good, a few pages professionally repaired, a few plates have a small illegible stamp, leather quite rubbed and worn, occasional light foxing or spotting in text but generally text is clean and bright. Collated complete except for the Pedigree chart. Excellent reading copy of this diary of life in 18thc England. Binding quite secure. Three large volumes in matching bindings. .
