Continental philosophy of social science; hermeneutics, genealogy, and critical theory from ancient Greece to the twenty-first centuryby Sherratt, Yvonne
Book desription: Cambridge U. Press, 2006. Paperback. New Book. Paperback. Although probably intended for undergraduate classrooms, this unique take on the continental approach may be appropriate for early postgraduate work as a survey. Rather than starting with continental thought and merely contrasting it with the Anglo-American rubric, Sherratt (philosophy, Oxford) spans the traditions of hermeneutics, genealogy and critical theory to include key texts from Derrida, Foucault, Gadamer, Habermas, Nietzsche, Ricoeur, and the early Frankfurt School. She includes ancient and biblical hermeneutics in her march to postwar continental theory, then works through the applications of genealogy and the history of critical theory, closing with commentary on Adorno and Habermas. The result is rigorous but fair to the student beginning the study of continental philosophy. Sherratt also provides those at the intermediate level with a clear context and idea of the progress of ideas while also giving her own unique twist. (© Book News, Inc., Portland, OR)
