Winchell), estate, affixed to front pastedown. Pencilled note, "From Mrs. J. M. Winchell," SIGNED & DATED "Geo. W. Martin, Dec. 20, 1878." (Mr. Martin, a lifelong newspaperman and influential politician, was Secretary [i.e., Director] of the Kansas State Historical Society from 1899 to 1914; which he co-founded in 1875.) The "Wyandot Constitution" is, of course, the constitution which was ratified by Congress, making Kansas our Nation's 34th State, effective Jan. 29, 1861. This extremely rare copy was recently purchased from the estate of a Wichita collector who had acquired it when it was deaccessed from the Anderson Memorial Library. When the State of Kansas enacted Senate Joint Resolution No. 3, Chapter 317, Laws of 1919, to have the Constitution reprinted it was noted: "Whereas, There are but Five or Six Copies of the Proceedings and Debates in existence; and Whereas, There Is But One of these copies in the State Library and that one, On Account of its Rarity and Value, must be kept locked in a vault . . ." Presumeably, this is One of the Five or Six Copies known at that time. *(Note the obvious error; it was approved by the Convention on July 29.). Signed, Association Copy. First Edition. Full-Leather. Good Plus. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Americana, History, Kansas, Law, Political Science. Similar books from this booksellerFrom this bookseller's History catalog.
