Description:
Sauk City, WI: Arkham House, 1939. First Editions. The first major collection of Lovecraft's weird fiction and the first production by the legendary Arkham House - a landmark in 20th century genre publishing. The 32 stories written for various pulp magazines were gathered and preserved by Lovecraft's friends, August Derleth and Donald Wandrei, who founded Arkham House in 1939 to preserve and publish the best of Lovecraft's fiction. The stories "range from early exercises in Dunsanian pastiche to the mature and highly distinctive tales of the Cthulhu Mythos, which construct a horrific cosmological and historical context for human history. Luckless protagonists who stumble upon various dire intrusions of Cthulhu and his kin, or who unwisely pursue dangerous inquiries in the appropriate revelatory tomes, are inevitably brought to repulsively stick ends. Lovecraft became the consummate master of the confirmatory ending, in which what has been suspected all along finally becomes manifest" (Barron, Horror… Read More

Description:
Buffalo: Shroud, Publishers, 1955. First edition in hardback of this, the first separate edition of a novella not published in Lovecraft's lifetime combining elements of horror and fantasy to illustrate the scope of humankind's ability to dream. Introduction by George T. Wetzel. One of the designated "50 Specially Bound Copies" with label pasted to colophon stating as such SIGNED BY THE EDITOR/PUBLISHER OF SHROUD, Kenneth J. Krueger (in red). From a total edition of 1,500 numbered copies, this being numbered 413 (the balance were issued in paperwraps). None of the copies (hardbound or softbound) were issued in a particular sequence and there seem to have been more than 50 hardbound copies, as they sometimes show up without the pasted label. The novella first appeared in August Derleth's Lovecraft collection BEYOND THE WALL OF SLEEP (Arkham House, 1943) and then in a "definitive version" with text corrected by S. T. Joshi in Arkham's AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS (1964). 8vo black cloth lettered in gilt… Read More

Description:
THE SHUNNED HOUSE, Arkham House, 2008, the publishers second hard cover edition (although the first edition with both printed sheets and binding by the publisher), as new without dust-wrapper as issued. This new edition, besides retaining the Frank Belknap Long preface, also prints for the first time an essay by Robert Weinberg detailing the printing and publishing history of this work. This is one of a handful of copies specifically SIGNED by Weinberg as well. The colophon states that this is #53 of 100 copies which includes 17 copies offered with an original signature from the first edition tucked in a sleeve attached to the r.p.d. (making no reference to any of them being SIGNED ). The authors most desirable first book (preceded by several pamphlets). Apparently now the Arkham House publication with the smallest print run and thus destined to be missing from many otherwise complete publisher collections.

Description:
New York: Author's Edition, 1923. [First Edition]. H.P. Lovecraft helped edit this book of poetry and contributed a 4-1/2 page "Biographical & Critical Preface" comprising over 2000 words, and additionally six poems dedicated to Jonathan E. Hoag, celebrating from his 87th to his 92nd birthdays. Although not written by Lovecraft this is an important addition to a Lovecraft library as his first appearance in hardcovers, a book he helped edit, and his more than 2000 word introduction on Hoag speaks of HPL's own views on poetry. There are additional tributes to Hoag from Winifrid Virginia Jackson, James F. Morton, Arthur H. Goodenough and others. The book is inscribed and signed in a florid hand, by Jonathan E. Hoag, dated July 20, 1923." Hoag lived into his 96th year, passing away in 1927. The gilt on the spine is dulled but readable. The book shows a little wear commensurate with age, and is signed by two additional amateurs of the time. A v.g.- copy.
