In the Beauty of the Lilies
John Updike's 17th novel is the absorbing saga of four generations of Wilmots, whose lives and occupations span huge portions of 20th-century America, running the gamut from preacher to encyclopedia salesman to movie star. The Wilmots' religious impulses take various forms: Clarence Wilmot is a traditional Presbyterian minister whose faith deserts him; his son, Teddy, is an atheist; his daughter, Essie, is a New Ager; and Essie's son is a Branch Davidian-style fanatic. Updike's lyrical exploration of the lives of middle-class Americans--achieved here with his usual grace and wit--is also a searching look at the place of religion in American life.

Crime and Punishment
This 1866 novel is Dostoevsky's great fictional study of the criminal mind, in the character of the student Raskolnikov, who murders an aged pawnbroker. Initially, Raskolnikov believes that the killing was entirely justified, but as the novel proceeds he becomes tortured by his guilt, and begins to question all his most passionately held beliefs. Eventually, while the wily police inspector Porfiry Petrovich simply waits, Raskolnikov--prompted by Sonia, a prostitute who is devoted to him--breaks down and confesses. Despite its bleak subject matter, the novel holds out the possibility of redemption; it is also an indictment of the social conditions in which the action unfolds.

Candide or Optimism
Candide, the quintessential innocent, has been taught by his tutor, Pangloss, that "all is for the best in this best of all possible worlds." Gradually, Candide and his beloved, Cunegonde, learn--as they travel through a world peopled with evil characters and various cruelties--the limits of Pangloss's philosophy. Voltaire's great comic masterpiece is a satire of the doctrine of optimism, which Voltaire sees as a blind acceptance of human misery.
