The Stalin Epigram - Advance Reading Copy
Robert Littell takes a forgotten nugget of Russian history and imagines it into a compelling portrait of the brutality inherent to the era of Stalinism in the Soviet Union. During the 1930s, poet Osip Mandelstam was one of the few Russian artists who openly refused to pay tribute to Stalin in his work. Having witnessed firsthand many of the dictator's atrocities, Mandelstam composed a blistering epigram calling Stalin an executioner with "cockroach whiskers." Needless to say, this poem is basically a suicide note, and it leads to Mandelstam's arrest and imprisonment, where he is tormented every second by not knowing when his keepers will deliver the fatal blow which he feels is inevitable. Littell mixes fictional characters with real historical figures, including Mandelstam's (future) widow Nadezhda, whom the author interviewed in 1979. Named one of the top 10 books of 2009 by the Washington Post.
