About Books is a second generation shop specializing in second hand, out of print and antiquarian books in most subjects.

I specialize in out-of-print academic books, leaning in a general way toward the social sciences and Continental philosophy, but also tend to find interesting first editions in fiction, (along an Updike-Cheever sort of continuum, with a García Márquez-Calvino cross axis) and interesting antiquarian books of a wide subject range and no particular price point. I\\\'m lucky to live in an area where it\\\'s possible without undue shrewdness or early rising to keep up a flow of a few hundred interesting books, getting more as required, instead of having (as many do) to intake books like plankton, straining out mass-market paperbacks and short-lifespan nonfiction titles by the literal thousands while retaining more substantial books via baleen. A huge benefit of a smaller inventory is that it\\\'s possible to spend a reasonable time evaluating each new book singly as it comes in. This means, among other things, that a book listed as a first edition is certain to have been verified via standard text, as well as examined wryly for negatives such as those faded red remaindering dots that one increasingly sees markered on the edges of books, those agents of heartbreak so often overlooked and so abruptly found. And this also amounts to a mode of bragging, certainly, but without undue shrewdness or early rising on one\\\'s side, one needs to work it a bit.

In addition to our book inventory, we carry a large inventory of 19th and early 20th century photography, 19th century maps and atlases, historical documents, posters, prints and art; postcards and paper ephemera of all kinds. We work with individual collectors and institutions developing collections in our specialty areas. Wee occasionally issue catalogs. Dream Garden Press is our in house publishing company, founded in 1980. Dream Garden has published the R. Crumb illustrated edition of Edward Abbey's The Monkey Wrench Gang; the Kirk Douglas limited signed edition of Edward Abbey's The Brave Cowboy.
