John Farrell sheds light on a particular genealogy of thinkers and authors--including Cervantes, Bacon, Hobbes, La Rochefoucauld, Locke, Swift, Voltaire, Rousseau, Marx, Dostoevsky, and Nietzsche--who demonstrate a pernicious attitude of paranoid suspicion, projecting their delusional mental states on the external world. These precursors, he argues, all point directly to Freud, who is himself "one of the most flagrant cases of the paranoid intellectual". This attitude of suspicion in Freud has, according to Farrell, irrevocably contaminated the psychoanalytic distinction between "madness" and "sanity."

This introduction to Jung is part of the Past Masters series published by Oxford University Press. Stevens, a Jungian analyst, examines Jung's life and career and provides an overview of the key terms and concepts of analytical psychology. He explains Jung's major contributions, such as his idea of the collective unconscious, his description of personality types, and his lifelong attention to myth and symbol. He also addresses the difficult subject of Jung's alleged anti-Semitism.
