Description:
1865. This two page hand-written report by J.M. Pierce for Captain Alanson W. Snyder from the Camp at Washington, D.C. After a list of ten being discharged, there are two important lists. The first is the list of deaths listing the names of those who died, the dates of their deaths, ranging from those who died at Andersonville, to those who died at camp hospitals, to one who died from drowning along with who died in Indiana. The second list is of those who died in battle at three locations most have never heard of (Nickjack Creek, Peechtree Creek, and Lick Skillet). Again each one lists the dates of their deaths. The condition is superb and fascinating to compare with Chaplain Daniel R. Lucas's History of the 99th Indiana Infantry (Lafayette, 1865). There are some differences from the printed version from this the original manuscript. For example, at least three of those noted in Lucas have the wrong state, also there are more detailed places in the document which in the printed record convert… Read More

Description:
Milwaukee: Strickland and Co, 1863. First Edition. Octavo. 288pp., (6)pp. Ads at Rear. The author, a surgeon of the Fifth Regiment of Wisconsin Volunteers during the Civil War, presents his journal to the public in the style for which it was written, without correction of even its grammatical errors. The reader will know the fact that it was written, not for the public, but for himself, whilst performing the most arduous duties in the confusion of camp life, sometimes amidst the depressing scenes of the hospital, sometimes in the tumult of battle, and amid the groans of the dying, much of it oh horseback, whilst witnessing the scenes described. Besides its general interest, this book has a local interest to all Wisconsin readers. And especially those particularly interested in the 5th Wisconsin. Bound in brown embossed cloth, spine lettering gilt, light wear to corners and head, small nick to spine, on signature lightly pulled away from top, a couple of stains to front board. A very good copy.

(np. 1882): Edgewood Publishing Co. First Edition. A majority of this horrible treatment was found at Andersonville. Bound in blue pictorial gilt cloth lettered and decorated in black and gilt, spine gilt but faded, wear to spine ends, wear to corners, evidence of removal of previous owner's bookplate, page edge toned. Description:
Washington, D.C.: Executive Mansion, 1863. Small Octavo. 4 page, folded pamphlet issued to military. The large number of desertions in the Civil War was becoming epidemic. Previously, they might go home to bring in a harvest, to visit a wife (or girl friend) or simply be tired of either war or what often seemed like endless waiting for something to happen. This offered soldiers amnesty if they returned before April 1, 1863. Their only penalty would be the forfeiture of pay and allowances during their absence. After that date they will be arrested as "deserters and punished as the law provides." Pages 2-3 lists 36 places where they can report. Besides those near the places of conflict, it includes locations as far away as Fort Vancouver (Washington Territory), Fort Randall (Dakota Territory), Salt Lake City, and San Francisco.

Description:
Washington, D.C.: G.R. Gray, Printer, 1891. Octavo. 2nd edition with corrections. 54 pages. Still one of the best firsthand accounts of the campaign. There was an 1888 edition but the map was wrong. First, it left off that Forrest's Cavalry was just above Reed's Bridge. Second, it had both Vanderveer and Steedman in the wrong direction. Whether this is why the original printer, Clarkson, was left out of the corrected edition is not clear. General Boynton was one of the three commisisoners who made the final planning of the historical monuments commemorating the battles. Col. John Tweedale, who won a Medal of Honor in the Civil War who served in the 15th Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry at Stones River, Tennessee, has signed the title page with a note he is with the War Department.
