Text in black and red, 13 x 16 cm. decorative wood covers backed in green cloth, bookseller label by firm of Gelber-Lilienthal Book Shop of San Francisco. (see James D. Hart, Rare Book Stores in San Francisco Fifty Years Ago, San Rafael, 1984). They introduced the Grabhorns to Valenti Angelo. It was Jane Grabhorn who did the typography of this lovely book.

Honolulu, Oah, H.I.: S.C. Damon, 1847. Quarto. 8p. A fine copy. Addresses the horrible conditions of the seaman. Besides severe beatings often leading to death, there are those who are demean them. Since the publication also wanted to promote temperance, the evangelical emphasis dealt with that also. It notes the levels of debaucery without details but besides the open sexuality throughout the ports of Polynesia, there is the hinted at but unmentioned problems of young men as victims of buggery. Of course, the paper shows those who are noticeable exceptions such as "Christian" captains but it implies conditions on the whalers were worst of all. In the back there is a list of sailings in and out of Honolulu as well as various items for sale chiefly for use on ocean voyages (rope, hooks, canvas for rigging, etc). A fascinating item in a protective folding case.

New York: Scribners, 1951. First Ediiton. Octavo. First printing. 861 pages. Author's First Book. When this book appeared it, like The Naked and the Dead, spoke of the reality of the soldier's life in World War II. The author was appointed corporal twice and each time was reduced to private. He served at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, during the Japanese attack on the Island of Oahu on December 7. Later at Guadacanal was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart. The novel was very explicit about sexual activity among soldiers in Hawaii. The movie censors changed Lorene from a prostitute to a hostess at a social club. Holmes gave Karen gonorrhea but in the movie it was a miscarriage that caused her to lose the baby. There are cases of men who fraternize with homosexuals but again taken out of the movie. Although the movie still is one of the best of its kind, the book has a raw power that could not be shown in the early 1950's to an America that denied sexuality. A remarkable view of Hawaii just months before the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941. 6th edition. Pictures of a peaceful island. The pictures at the end of the book show the happy officers who are enjoying the natural beauty of this island paradise. A later page shows the formation of the army in review and adding the comment that they function as a "well-organized industry" guarding our western frontier. Staple bound in color pictorial stiff paper wraps. chip to bottom edge and corner of upper wrap.

Washington, DC: GPO, 1932. Decorated Cloth. Very Good. 131p. Inscribed by the author who was Executive Assistant of the Interior. The racial background was becoming an issue where Japanese outnumbered native Hawaiians, followed by Filipinos, Portuguese, Caucasians, Chinese, and miscellaneous other races. Much on the early culture, the missionary influence and the beginning of tourism. Many illustrations including native Hawaiians surfing (no Caucasians yet), the native girls of Hawaii, the sugar cane, pineapple harvests, etc. A fascinating look at the territory less than ten years before Pearl Harbor.

Biography of Roy Kelley (1905- ) who went to Hawaii from California in 1929 and built the Outrigger hotel chain, which has become a multi-million dollar business in Hawaii. Includes information on the Kelley family. Bound in tan cloth stamped with an illustration of an outrigger in gilt, spine lettering and all edges gilt, a fine copy housed within publisher's slipcase with color pictorial pastedown. A fine copy.

Honolulu(1902 But Reprinted 1945): Ka Papa Hawaii. Oblong 12 Mo. 285p. Hawaiian Language. Reprinted in 1945 as the congregation of the Kawaiaa'o Church was now filled with servicemen who loved the old hymns which here were often sung in Hawaiian and English. It was at one time the national church of the Hawaiian Kingdom and this was its hymnal based on the selections of the Hawaiian Evangelical Association, includes the section He Buke No Ka Paepae ana i Ka Huhan O Ke Anaina Hoomana--page [233]-285. Some are such passages as I Korineto 13 which discusses faith, hope and love, Epeso 6:10-17 which presents the Christian's armor. Pasted in the front endpaper is the Hawaiian words to Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah [E kai oe, e Iehova, I kou ihini nei" Prefaces in English and Hawaiian. Originally property of the Kawaiahao Church, this older version still has survived in good condition with original black cloth cover.

Thurston published by the Advertising Publishing Company. This set is numbered 187 with the limitation slip mounted on the lining papers of each volume. Originally written for joint serial publication with Lorrin A. Thurston's memoirs in the Honolulu Advertiser. Thurston's chapter begins with Jack London's arrival on his yacht Snark in 1907. Thurston provides interesting details about London's fixed writing routine, his despising of what today would be called "political correctness" on the racial issues inherent in Hawaii, followed by Thurston's defense. The opening pages provide facsimile signatures of dozens of distinguished Americas from President McKinley, Leonard Wood, virtually all the naval and military high command, with such heroes as Theodore Roosevelt, George Dewey, A rich color map of the United States Torpedo Boat Winslow and other notable autographs at the appropriate places throughout the book. The largest part is devoted to Hawaiian volcanoes on pages 80-219. Besides maps of all the major islands, it deals with the major eruptions and its effect on the population. There is also a report on the mining geology of the Eureka District of Nevada; A large section on fossils of oysters and the life-history of the oyster, finally, there is geological reconnance in southern Oregon. Bound in maroon cloth centrally stamped in a pictorial gilt, spine lettering gilt, a damp stain to lower front corner, new endpapers, damp staining to lower corners of leaves.

Don Blanding had read his poem about a virgin who had no interest in changing her status until she was given (fiendishly) a copy of Vermillion Sin" (an unpublished novel) by Elinor Glyn who created the term "it" girl who referred to the girl with electric sex appeal. Clara Bow, Rudolf Valentino, and Gloria Swanson were all influenced by her. Jimmy Starr a Hollywood gossip columnist from the 1920's acquired a large part of the library of Valentino which is noted in this bookplate. Bound in 1/4 tan cloth over paper covered boards, paper spine label lettered in black. A near fine copy with just a bit of off-setting to endpapers.
