Description:
Adyar: The Theosophical Publishing House, 1961. Octavo. Third edition. Portrait frontispiece, 297 pages. A remarkable book by a woman who not only was well-versed with the history of philosophy, but deeply interested in pedagogy. For those who have found the sad state of American publication lacking, here she has written a work on moral philosophy and the need not to merely talk about morals but to introduce them a all levels so a child senses them without necessarily naming its philosophers. For Montessori, the teacher's ability to set up an environment that allows children to cultivate their own moral sense is essentialf morally good actions. In 2015 Patrick R. Frierson's article in the History of Philosophy Quarterly, pp.271-292 show how deep her moral sense was developed in a sense of "moral theory". Bound in brown paper covered boards lettered in black, spine lettering black, spine faded and some droplets to spine and a bit of tiny spots of foxine to page edges. A very good copy.

Description:
London: T. Nelson and Sons, 1870. 12mo. frontispiee, 313p. A sympathetic look at the plight of England's poor in the period Dickens frequently described from the heart of a minister whose own physical deformity helped him to have compassion for the unfortunate. His stories recalled village life of the poor. His chapter: the Negro Servant is an odd mixture both reiterating the fundamentalist legend about the curse of Ham as the origin of the Negroes. Nevertheless, the author condemns the evil of the slave trade where he notes that it was conducted on the high seas by nations whose flag identify them as Christian yet they deal in the horrendous vile traffic. The minister then welcomes the black servant as a believer and he embraces him as a brother. The book is a pretty book with all edges gilt, the original cloth shows a bit of wear to extremeties, with a beautiful blue pictorial panel inset depicting a young woman teaching a small child, within a gilt and black decorative border. Very nice.

Description:
Worcester, MA: Printed By Isaac Sturtevant for Remark Dunnell, 1814. 16mo. 192 pages. Sharon Block writing in the Journal of American History notes that this is one of the books that terrified and incensed the populace who read about the vicious rapes by the redcoats (p. 116ff.). While courts of law kept the intimate details from the wider public, newspapers, books, almanacs, and a host of printed material were less restrained though leaving little to the imagination to whom the subject of rape was of prurient interest. After describing the various outrages, the address says: How long will you permit this? (report and appeal from Col. Richard E. Parker, Westmoreland County, Virginia) Bound in full contemporary sheep, flat spine ruled in gilt, red morocco spine label gilt, pages toned, light wear to binding. A very good copy.

Description:
Seattle, (1927): The Industrial Worker. First Edition. Octavo. 172p. A History of Militant labor in the United States The labor movement from the mid-1880's to the period before World War II, was not only subject to lockouts but more frequently the hired thugs of the Pinkerton Detective Agency alongside the local police attempted to suppress any attempt of the workers to unionize. This is a systematic account of how the courts with the federal, state, and local governments were used to suppress any attempt of the workers to have protection from the greed and intimidation of the owners. Threats, mass firings, beatings and murder were all part of the arsenal used by the organized crime syndicate of the corporations. There are a number of photographs showing the victims whether on a coroner's slab, a disfigured woman, a child including men who had been tarred and feathered. Today we find virtually no physical violence done to workers since the corporations now can resort to moving to… Read More

Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2004. Cloth. Near Fine/No Dust Jacket as Issued. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 309p. index. It was Lewis Grizzard (the only eyewitness to the event) who said when Mexicans were hung for rebellion against the United States "but it was their country"--The Anglo-Hispanic culture which was far more pronounced in blending in New Mexico; nevertheless, was a main part of Texas history. The author writes: "This was a world of fluid identities." Besides Lorenzo de Zavala, there is the case of Stephen F. Austin who not only shifted his loyalities giving up his U.S. citizenship to become a Mexican national in order to honor a colonization contract his father had made, but many more. What had been the North of Mexico became the American Southwest. An important contribution.
