Japanese postcard with printed photograph group portrait of aboriginal family, all standing, with smallest child held on the shoulders of the father, strangely smiling as if he is showing off new dentures; all wearing loin cloths and standing in a natural setting. With Japanese text in red printed below the picture. Divided back, not posted, with "Made in Japan Seikaido Tokyo" printed in the divider. 3 1/2 x 5 1/2"

Collection of 7 essays which display the wide gulf between Aboriginal and European Australia during the 1930s, and the distinctive Aboriginal culture of the time. 8vo, 110pp, b&w photographs, maps. Orange paper wrappers with title in black at front cover and spine. Spine slt sunned, o/w very good. Meggitt copy, signed on the half title. Meggitt was a noted Australian anthropologist, recognized for his research on Papua New Guinea and Aboriginal Australia.

1815. Very good condition. Early hand colored copper engraving of Sydney, with Aborigines tending a fire at the left foreground, tents on the shore in the middle ground, and the harbor with many sailing ships, and the city in the distance. With the text sheet, in both German and French, which describes Sydney as a place of exile for English criminals: "Elle [Sydney] sert en meme tems (sic) de lieu d'exil pour les criminelles anglais, qu'on y transporte, et que l'on applique aux ouvrages publics (sic), jusqu'a ce qu'ils aient subi leurs peines." At the top of the text sheet, "Melanges, CXCV, Vol VIII, No. 48". Text sheet with a bit of fox spotting; the upper corner with 3/4" crescent torn away, not affecting text. The engraving bright and clean. 8 1/2 x 6 3/4" image on paper 9 1/2 x 7 3/4"

Quote from p. 103, "On the continent (Australia) too, the population of the natives is annualy decreasing, and therefore they may be exterminated before long. The Englishmen in Australia have declared the so-called "White Australia" and are preventing the immigrants of other races to come in. Therefore the Chinese living there are terribly illtreated." 8vo, tan paper covers, black text on front. 109 pp English, 72 pp Chinese. Hamburg: Hoffmann, 1791. Hardcover. Very good overall. The third German edition of 'The Voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay' including an important folding map, not recorded by Tooley, showing the eastern seaboard of Australia, extending from New Guinea, New Caledonia, New Zealand and the Marshall Islands. The coast of 'Neu Holland' shows "Neu Sud Wallis [endeckt?] 1770", and Botany Bay and Port Jackson with "Sidney cove". Port Jackson and Botany Bay are exaggerated in size. The map, titled 'Charte von Neu Holland, Neu Georgien und den Lord Mulgrave Inseln', is not listed in Tooley but is referenced as no. 1791-16 in Perry & Prescott's "A Guide to Maps of Australia in Books Published 1780-1830..." Neither of the first two German editions appear in Ferguson, an abbreviated version of 86 pages with one map & 1 plate (Leipzig: 1789) and the second in Berlin in 1790. Wonderful photograph album of Victoria, New South Wales, and Tasmania, with large photographs and manuscript titles. A total of 47 photos, with 33 of Victoria, 6 of New South Wales, 5 of Tasmania, 1 of New Zealand, and 2 others. Each photograph is lightly tipped on to the album paper, with blank verso. Most of the photographs are by an unknown photographer; there are also some signed by J.W. Beattie, Thomas Foster Chuck, Frank Arnold Coxhead, C. Rudd, and J.P., possibly John Paine. One of the most striking & largest photograph is of "Aboriginals of Lake Tyers". It is an outdoor view of a family group of aborigines, from children to grand parents, dressed in western clothing, with spear, boomerangs and lean-to behind them. Others include some rather poetic views of woodcutters at Black Spur & Fernshaw; a couple of gold mining at Bendigo including Garden Gully United Gold Mining Company, with houses in fore and background. Oxford, 1952. Hardcover. Very good condition. The author's copy of the typewritten thesis of Australian anthropologist D'Arcy Ryan, for the degree of B. Litt. at Lincoln College, Oxford, on Australian totemism, with his pencil annotations. D'Arcy Ryan (1923 - 2014) was born in Bondi, educated in Sydney and Oxford and lectured for 25 years at the University of Western Australia, an expert on the Mendi people of the Highlands of Papua New Guinea. The author put his academic work at Oxford into perspective in his autobiographical essay in another work, "Ethnographic Presents: Pioneering Anthropologists in the Papua New Guinea Highlands", edited by Terence Hays: "In these days, when many postgraduate students are demanding that supervisors be a cross between a parent, confessor, and nanny, the casual style of Oxford supervision may seem incredible; indeed, in retrospect, it was. Six aborigines are pictured in a view at a camp. A chief, with ritualistic chest scarring, a boomerang & club tucked into the waistband of a skin, wearing a headdress & with a spear; three women, one older holding a baby; a younger woman holding a container; and one dressing a dead kangaroo in front of a campfire and two men behind. Most interesting for the decorated shield, decorative bags and decorated bark paintings drying in the foreground. Plate XIV. Not found in Trove.
