1911. Very good condition. A striking black and white photographic portrait of the Italian composer of opera, including La Boheme, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, and Turandot. With a handwritten and signed note. The note is on letterhead 'Torre del Lago, Toscana', and dated September 30, 1911, and reads "My Dear Tonino, I stopped by to say hello to you and the young lady, but nobody was at home. I am leaving for London and Liverpool, and I shall be back in about twelve days. I am having an addition built to my existing cement dock extending out on the lake. I shall have it built with wood, covered by sheet metal, three meters by five. I am telling you this so that you may notify the town authorities. Our friend, Nasone, continues to spoil my hunting expeditions by preceding me with his early morning walks and flushing out whatever game there is. How long can this go on, I ask you? If this continues, I shall wind up asking you to introduce me to the sport of fishing, and I shall make you an offer you…

Ephemera. Good + overall. A 1911 signed letter from John Burroughs, the American poet, essayist & naturalist (1837 - 1921), friend of Walt Whitman and Henry David Thoreau, to "Johnson". The letter reads, "Yours rec'd. I am rewriting parts of my new essays & trying to cut them down. When I get them in shape to suit me I will send them along. "Horse Sense" has gone elsewhere. Hope this day finds you well & thankful. Yours as always, John Burroughs". "Horse Sense" appeared in Volume 71 of The Independent, and debunked the story of a clever horse named Hans: "Here was a horse that had set all Germany agog by its supposed astonishing feats of intelligence, and stirred up bitter strife and debate among many prominent scientific men..." (p1198). Written at West Park NY. 5 1/2 x 9". With short closed tear at top edge.

Other animals include bees, an owl, elephants, goats, tigers, and sheep. Description:
1914. The Imperial Trans-Antarctic expedition of 1914-1917 is considered to be the last major expedition of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. Conceived by Sir Ernest Shackleton, the expedition was an attempt to make the first land crossing of the Antarctic continent. After Roald Amundsen's South Pole expedition in 1911, this crossing remained, in Shackleton's words, the 'one great main object of Antarctic journeyings'.* Shackleton's expedition failed to accomplish this objective, but became recognized instead as an epic feat of endurance." Shackleton's ship "Endurance" was locked in the pack ice of the Weddell Sea, eventually crushed and sank, stranding its 28-man complement on the ice. After months in makeshift camps, the party took to the lifeboats to reach the inhospitable, uninhabited Elephant Island. Shackleton and five others then made an 800-mile (1,300 km) open-boat journey in the James Caird to reach South Georgia. From there, Shackleton was eventually able to mount a rescue of the…
