The book is an exposé of the attempt to establish what the author perceived to be a CIA front group on the campus of Southern Illinois University. Protests against the Center in large part led to rioting that resulted in the cancellation of classes and the temporary closing of the SIU campus in may 1970. The book is profusely illustrated with photographs of people involved in the Center for Vietnamese Studies. The book is clean and tight, with some minor smearing of lettering on the front cover. There are some tiny cuts in margins of half of the pages--apparently caused by the binding process--they are relatively unobtrusive.. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good +. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. University of Kentucky professor of Appalachian studies Harry Caudill said of Palmer: "Palmer has given us the best view we will ever have of life and work in the Southern Appalachians. . . . His magnificent collection of photographs preserves the old way of life for us to study and ponder." Palmer's photographs are now housed in the Earl Palmer Appalachian Photograph and Artifact Collection at Virginia Tech. An excellent study of his work can be found in the book by Jean Haskell Speer, The Appalachian Photographs of Earl Palmer, published by the University of Kentucky Press in 1990. In his first bid for re-election, Franklin Roosevelt's campaign focused on economic issues that were of special concern during the Great Depression. This campaign broadside reflects one of those issues--trade wars that were hurting American factories and farmers.
