Original hardback, with a Holbein drawings of a man in black hat with brown hair on the front cover. No edgewear, slight soiling on the boards. The book was badly made, when opened it forced the spine to tear the outer paper hinges. In this case, the spine is still present and is protected in a clear, mylar dustjacket. Iniside hinges are tight, very clean with no prior owner marks. Thorough descriptions of each plate, and captions in German and English. The book was printed in Belgium just before WW Two broke out. A solid book despite the faulty construction of the outer spine. .

Henri Vever was an esteemed and wealthy jeweler in Paris who became one of the earliest collectors of Japanese prints in the late 19th century. Original publisher brown cloth with a lighter brown panel on the front cover that includes the title and a Bewick bird on a branch. Corners bumped, spine ends worn, spine darkened with the gilt from the title worn off. Back hinge has a three inch tear near the bottom, but hinges for this large book are solid. The publisher made two sizes of this production, and this is the large paper edition of which only 75 copies were made, this being number 42. Title continues, "with an Account of His Career and Achievements in Art , with a Notice of the Works of John Bewick". Exceptionally clean inside.
