This series of auctions took place following the death of Iisabella Bewick, the last surviving daughter of thomas Bewick. A fine reference to the Bewick woodcuts and sketches, as well as his household furnishings, with full page woodcuts a nice bonus. Original hardback, with a Holbein drawings of a man in black hat with brown hair on the front cover. No edgewear, slight soiling on the boards. The book was badly made, when opened it forced the spine to tear the outer paper hinges. In this case, the spine is still present and is protected in a clear, mylar dustjacket. Iniside hinges are tight, very clean with no prior owner marks. Thorough descriptions of each plate, and captions in German and English. The book was printed in Belgium just before WW Two broke out. A solid book despite the faulty construction of the outer spine. .

Stated 8th Edition. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. A new full red morocco leather binding in exceptional condition. The paper is fine, with no stains, no browning and no foxing. The advantage of the later editions is the addition of several animals from New South Wales. Pages x, 526. Bewick set a new standard for quality woodcuts with this famous book, first published in 1790. The binding has raised bands on the spine and bright gilt title and author lettering, and gilt emblems in the other four spine panels. Handsewn Japanese silk endbands. Hand marbled endpapers from Scotland. Just barely a quarton at ten inches tall. .

Title continued, "from the Henri Vever Collection". All four volumes from auctions in 1974, 1974, 1977 and 1997. Grey cloth with no edge wear, no prior owner marks, no stains or foxing. Dustjackets with the slightest hint of edgewear, protected in mylar sleeves. Henri Vever was an esteemed and wealthy jeweler in Paris who became one of the earliest collectors of Japanese prints in the late 19th century. He sold a part of his collection (assumed to be all of it at the time) and that is now the major part of the Tokyo National Museum. But the larger portion of his collection was hidden in his home from the Germans in WW Two, and did not reappear until the first Sotheby auction in 1974. Fine red cloth with a fine dust jacket with the slightest wrinkle along the top. This is the American first edition, but it was printed in England and is identical to the UK first. The less famous brother, jJohn apprenticed with Thomas Bewick , then moved to London. The book includes a thorough, annotated catalogue of John's illustrations and designs. The Bewick brothers remain an inspiration to wood engravers. .

The definitive study and biography of Kate Greenaway, published the same year as the first edition. Fine, recent design binding in full yellow morocco leather. Original original watercolors in the style of Greenaway, one each indented into the covers, one each on front and rear marbled endpapers, and the fifth on a page before the half title, attributing the watercolors to artist Alexandra Altman. Two wide raised bands on the spine, and title in blue. Pages xx, 301 plus 2 pages publisher ads. A fine copy in white card covers, immaculate inside and out. This is a celebration of the Welsh painter, Kyffin Williams. A book of his watercolors was bound by 13 leading binders of the Design Binders, 2 bindings each. All of them are illustrated and explained. r.

Near Fine. 3/4 Leather. 2nd Edition. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Quite a remarkable copy, in 3/4 deep red morocco, gilt double lines along the edges, raised bands on the spine, gilt art deco flowers in the blocks between the raised bands and brown marbled boardswith matching marbled endpapers. Slight wear at two corners. Top edge gilt. In addition to the biography, there is a listing of about 1000 portraits executed by Stuart including their whereabouts as of 1879. Very clean and tight inside, nearly as new. No prior owner marks, no stains or age toning. There is no attribution for this fine binding which I suspect was a publisher's special, limited copy. .

London: The Art Journal Office, 1882. Book. Illus. by frontispiece engraving of Bewick and 100 Bewick woodcuts. Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Original publisher brown cloth with a lighter brown panel on the front cover that includes the title and a Bewick bird on a branch. Corners bumped, spine ends worn, spine darkened with the gilt from the title worn off. Back hinge has a three inch tear near the bottom, but hinges for this large book are solid. The publisher made two sizes of this production, and this is the large paper edition of which only 75 copies were made, this being number 42. Title continues, "with an Account of His Career and Achievements in Art , with a Notice of the Works of John Bewick". Exceptionally clean inside. Book plate of Edward Bellamy, and no other prior owner marks. .

A cultural, artistic history of our country with profuse illustrations , compiled from the collections of the etropolitan Museum of Art and other sources by the author, who was Editor of Pubications at the Museum at that time. Original red cloth with no edge wear to both volumes. bright titles on the spine and insides are clean and tight. No smudges, browning or prior owner marks. Volume one does not have a dust jacket. Volume two has a good dj, worn, with a piece missing from the top of the spine. A tear is repaired on the verso. A very readable, optomistic history from just after WW Two. The publisher's flimsy slipcase is in remarkably good condition with edge wear. Pages 573 and 503.
