Hand colored with ca 2" x 4 1/2" handsome engraved cartouche of Government House & Treasury, Calcutta in upper left hand corner and 3 inset maps of Bombay, Calcutta and Madras, each about 2 1/2 by 4 inches. Alvin Jewett Johnson (1827-1884) was one of the leading American cartographic publishers in the second half of the 19th century. He moved to New York from Richmond about 1860 and teamed up with Ward, a partnership which last until about 1866. He published a number of atlases from one of which this would appear to have been taken. A handsome item for framing..
