In the original attractive pictorial and blind stamped blue morocco-grain cloth, with gilt titling and decoration to the spine, and a gilt illustration / part title to the front cover. The design is by John Leighton. Signed "JL" in gold as a monogram at the base of the vignette in the base foliage. The head/tail and corners of the book are 'soft' and rubbed, with a little light fraying, as are the edges, and some of the gilt is wearing away on the centre of the illustration. Small slits/tears to the top and bottom edges of both sides of the spine, but overall a very sound and attractive copy. Despite the small splits in the outer cloth as noted, ALL Hinges are tight - outer and inner. ALL fore-edges gilt. A Lovely Ernest Nister published childrens book in poetic form, illustrated with both monotone illustrations and beautiful chromolithographs. Lacks rear free endpaper. In Pictorial paper-covered boards, covers a little worn with scratches mainly to the plain rear cover. The corners and edges rubbed, and the head/tail of spine bumped with a little hole to the very foot of the red cloth spine. Internally there is a tiny booksellers label (Wm. In original tan sand-grained cloth boards with bright gilt titling to both the spine and front cover, and an inlaid colour portrait of Pears' signature 'Bubbles' portrait to the centre of the front cover, with decorative black borders. The base colour to the spine is slightly faded as usual but the titling is still bright. The page fore-edges have some light foxing (very pale tan spots) but as the whole book is printed on quality paper these don't affect the inside. Wonderful Pictorial boards back and front - Frys Advert to the rear - with a plain cloth spine with three black 'stars' at the foot - denoting Volume 3 I assume. The boards are rubbed to all extremities but are so attractive! No Date shown, but Dr. Barnardo, a medical doctor whose mission was to help those in poverty, supported his philanthropic practice by editing & publishing children’s periodicals between 1874 & his death in 1905. This series - Bubbles: A Volume of True Tales and Coloured Pictures - superseded 'Our Darlings' in 1894. So as this is Volume 3 it has to be c. 1896. The remaining compartments have some raised stamped decoration. Some light edgewear to some areas of the extremitites, but an attractive pair. This copy is in red pictorial cloth and has bright gilt titling to the spine and front board and All edges are gilt. Usually the copy of the book with gilt tends to be a 1st - but in this case I do not know. There is a School prize label on the front pastedown inside - dated 1905. So probably a 1st UK Edition c. 1897 - 1905? . I've guessed at 1899. The covers are bright and clean - just the slightest of shelf wear to the very corners/extremities - negligible. One of those Wonderfully Decorated Books that the Folio Society do so well - This one quite scarce and for CHRISTMAS! In FINE original burgundy coloured, gilt decorated, cloth-covered boards, with bright gilt decorative titling to the spine and front board. The front board with added bright red and green! Beautiful!. In the original green slipcase which has a few marks from storage (hence not marking the book 'As New') but it is crisp and sharp-cornered without damage. The top edge of the book is a light purple/mauve as issued, and the remainder of the fore-edges have a very few pale flecks, which you can only see if you peer very closely, but they present as very clean and white.
