Scattered foxing and/or browning throughout the volume (a common with French publication of this period). ** First edition of the first important manual for plant teratology. A German translation was published as "Pflanzen-Teratologie. Lehre von dem regelwidriger Wachen und Bilden der Pflanzen. Mit Zusätzen von J.K. Schauer" Being the second volume of Nees von Esenbeek's Handbuch der Pflanzen Pathologie... (Berlin, 1842). Moquin-Tandon, physician, zoologist and botanist will be best remembered as a malacologist, although he was one of the founder of modern phyto-teratology. With 1 double page table and numerous illustrations. ¶ With a foreword by Robert Jones, the geatest figure in British orthopaedics: "This book aims at establishing principles explaining the manner in which body growth is affected by injurious influences. These principles have hitherto been ignored by textbooks of pathology.... The author gives us a standard for judging the 'constitution' of men from size, form, attitude and grait, from the condition of their hands and feet; and the insight into the causes of these defects provides us with principles to cultivate strength in future generations.... It carries a torch into the dark places and display a new line of research both fascinating and scientific, and of great social and practical promis". The author, an orthopaedic surgeon of international reputation, will be remembered for his theory of dissociation of bone growth (see g&m, 4395).

Paris,: C. Reinwald,, 1876.. [iv], 50 pp. 8vo (15 x 23 cm.). Original printed wrappers, uncut. ¶ Copy with author's autograph dedication (illegible) . The genuine offprint of 1876, being the very rare prospectus to the first edition (1877) of Dareste's great classic on experimental teratology (see Garrison & Morton 534.64). Dareste has distributed only a very few copies of this 'tirage à part' among selected persons. There are three other copies of this offprint known to exist, one with the autograph dedication to baron Larrey.

Paris,: C. Reinwald,, 1891.. xvi, 590 pp. 8vo (17 x 25 cm.). Original dark red publisher's buckram, spine gilt lettered & decorated, uncut. With 62 figures in the text and 16, partly coloured, chromolithographical plates with their leaves of explanatory text. ¶ A very good and clean copy of this classic work on experimental teratology. Garrison-Morton 534.65: "Dareste devoted his career to experimental teratology, and in this work established the field as a science". This second edition is greatly revised and enlarged (the first of 1877 has only 364 pages). Contains a valuable history of teratology. --(Some scattered light foxing along the edges).

With 126 illustrations and an atlas of 28 plates. ¶ Prize essay, crowned with gold, and a classic comparative study on the fetal monster with two heads. --(Nwe. Verh.
