Signed by author on front free end paper with encouraging words, "Ride on, brave lad.". Born in 1860, Halsell worked as a cowboy and rancher most of his life. Cited in Adams' "Thundering Herd" #979. 253 pp. Front end paper also has previous owner's name stamped near bottom edge. Book has a right lean with moderate wear to edgesr. Rear end paper has list of page #s with subjects of interest, i.e., "116 Stampede" or "124 Cowboy bedroll". Many penciled notations throughout, and opens to signature pp 176-177. Page edges are tanned. Dust jacket has bright cowboy camp fire graphic on front. Substantial chipping loss and creasing on edges.A few small dark spots show on white background.Now in protective cover. A singular piece of history.

Signed by him on half title page. Hiram Chamberlain was a Presbyterian minister who brought the first protestant church to the lower Rio Grande region of Texas. His daughter, Henrietta King, tassumed ownership of the King Ranch after her husband, Richard's death in 1885. She increased the size of the ranch,once known as the largest in the world, and saw to the welfare and education of the families who lived on the ranch. One of only 400 copies printed by noted Texas bookman Thomas Taylor with high production values.103 pp + Epilogue and colophon on last page. Small quarto, 7-1/2"W X 10-1/2"H. Minor edge wear and small brown spot on lower edge of front panel and small mark on spine beneath title.Very scarce.

Very light corner and spine end wear, and light rubbing shows on cream-colored background.

Corners and top spine end have very light wear. Bottom of spine shows slight wear in the cloth. Corner of bottom page edge has light shelf soiling - clean interior. Dust jacket is bright gold, also has ranch brands. Light corner and edge wear. Some light soiling shows on front title area, and hinges and rear panel have some dark rubbing. Now in protective cover. Very nice signed copy.

Page edges are slightly darkened and have spotting/staining. Interior clean. Dust jacket has bumping on corners. Spine ends have creasing and a little chipping, with bottom front hinge having a 1/4" closed tear. Rear panel shows rubbing on white background. Flap folds have some tape discoloration.

Clear acetate wrapper provided by previous owner is showing wear but was probably instrumental in preventing wear through the years.
