One page of publisher's ads at front, engraved frontispiece and first title page; 242 pp. plus 10 pp. of illustrated publisher's ads for children's books at rear. Eight full,page plates plus vignettes in the text. Stories for young folks, including three Christmas tales. A tight example, all gilt bright, slightly cocked. Some very light shallow tidemarking here and there but text and plates are bright. Previous owner name and address and date "Christmas 1864" on the front free endpaper. Virginia Frances Townsend (1836-1920) was native of New Haven and by the age of 16 had been published in "The Ladies' Repository"; in 1856 she became the associate editor of T.S. Arthur's "Lady's Home Magazine". The true (1862) first edition of "Amy Deane" is quite uncommon.
