College football novel featuring Barry Leighton Shane, a self-absorbed Boston prep-school star who comes to the University of Michigan Wolverines to play halfback against such opponents as Army, Penn, Illinois and Michigan State. Very uncommon in this condition; book and jacket design in Wolverine blue and yellow.

Dark blue cloth lettered in gilt and with gilt small decoration of a mounted horsewoman jumping a fence. 324 pps. with index. 35 instructional illustrations in the text. Rare and important work on horse-womanship for the American female. A tight copy but with dampstaining to the outer corners of the front cloth, significant dampstaining to the rear cover and rear pastedown and some moderate soiling to the outer margins of the text block beginning about halfway through, not affecting the text. Priced accordingly.

A brilliant, fresh copy in bright crisp, nearly new looking dust jacket wth vintage football illustration; jacket has a small smudge on the front panel and a very shallow chip to the foot of the spine and a very small scrape further up. Anthology of pieces from one of the most popular young person's adventuer magazines of the first half of the 20th century, "The American Boy". A successor to "Youth's Companion", the magazine was in print from 1899 to 1941 and featured such contributors as Ralph Henry Barbour, William Heyliger and Ellis Parker Butler as well as offering occasional instructional and inspirational articles by sports stars like Christy Mathewson, Ty Cobb, Jim Thorpe and Red Grange. A lovely, highly collectible copy.

Very good, modest signs of use, internally clean and unmarked. He was seven foot five and four hundred fifty pounds; he was billed as the "Eighth Wonder of The World"; he was the greatest attraction in wrestling and one of the most famous athletes in the world. Andre Roussimoff (1946-1993) began his profesional wrestling carrier in his native France. Under his ring name "Andre The Giant" he rose to fame with the WWWF/WWF (now the WWE) in 1973 and in 1988 defeated Hulk Hogan in the first "The Main Event' to win the WWF World Heavyweight Championship. Outside the ring, he famously appeared in the movie "The Princess Bride" as Fezzik. Andre was the first inductee into the WWF Hall of Fame though this honor was posthumous as he died in 1993.

Hardcover. 272 pp. Illustrated with photographs. Biography of hockey Hall of Fame goaltender Bernie Parent. A native of the Montreal suburbs, his boyhood hero was Canadiens goalie Jacques Plante. Parent began his NHL career with the Boston Bruins in 1965-66 but when the league expanded in 1967, he was claimed by the new Philadelphia Flyers franchise. He would be with the Flyers from 1967 to 1971 and was traded to the Totonto Maple Leafs where Plante was still active. After a year in the WHA, he returned to the Flyers for their "Broad Street Bullies" glory years. Parent was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1984.

A rather scarce, British biography of late 19th-early 20th century bare-knuckled heavyweight boxing legend Jack Johnson. Born in Galveston, Johnson rose to prominence in the in the brutal turn of the century prize fighting world, securing the World Heavyweight Championship in 1908. Challenged again in 1910, he defeated Jim Jefferies. Johnson was a colorful, but often controversial figure, married four times (three of his wives were white), outspoken, and notorious. He was a fugitive from justice from 1913 to 1920.

There is a handwritten inscription on the first page "____/ I was so honored to have helped inspire such a wonderful love story! I am so glad you were as enhanced as I in the story by Frank/ Best Wishes/ Mary Lou Petty Skok" She is credited in the acknowledments by Deford as being one of the sources of the story. Mary Lou Perry represented the United States in the infamous "Nazi Olympics" of 1936, placing 4th in the 400 meter freestyle. As of 2013, she was the oldest surviving member of the 36 U.S. Olympic team.
