London: C. Cooke, ND [1793]. First edition thus. Leather Bound. Good. 12mo (4.5cm). In a pretty tree calf binding with now rubbed and faded gilt dentelles to board edges. Title and publisher labels to spine. pp. [blanks] 3-200. Engraved title page and a further two very nice engraved plates accompanying text. Armorial bookplate of Charles Robinson with motto, Vertute non Verbis, to front pastedown. Crack to front joint, still holding well, some wear to boards, spine, but overall a very sound copy, no foxing or loose pages. The BL attributes the publication date to 1793 in its holdings.

London: George Eyre and Andrew Strahan, 1820. Half Leather. Good. 4to. Half calf, leather title label to spine, marbled paper over boards. Likely a binder's error, this copy has the following collation: iv (inc tp), 1-64, followed by numerous blank pages, which make up roughly two thirds of the text block. The table of contents at iii-iv states that the pagination ends, as it does, at p. 62. By contrast, the only similar copy located by Copac, held by the National Trust, gives pagination of vi,[2],122+p. Condition is good, although much of the marbled paper covers have been worn away or torn. However, bar some early offsetting and browning, still a decent, clean copy.

Half brown morocco over pale green cloth, four raised bands to spine, gilt title to spine compartment with gilt rules. Blue and gold marbled endpapers, matching blue marbled page edges. Vol I: Previous owner's name to first blank. vii, 599. Vol II: 583. Vol III: 580. All with title pages. Joints and spine ends with minor rubs, colour to spines somewhat faded. A pretty set, attractively bound and uncommon in this smaller format.

London: John Bell, 1788. First Edition, thus. Half Leather. Good to Very Good. Printed Complete From the Best Editions of Sam. Johnson and Geo. Steevens. 12mo (15cm). Complete in 20 volumes, with essays by Samuel Johnson, George Steevens, many of the plays with separate, lengthy, very detailed annotations, setting out bibliographical issues, printing history and the like. An important scholarly reference for the time, gathering together numerous essays and commentaries on the plays. Under Bell's direction, these sets would have been issued at a competitive price. The Encyclopaedia Londinensis, first issued in parts, attempted to offer a broad sweep across the sum of human knowledge, very much in the Enlightenment tradition established by Diderot's famous Encyclopedia of 1751. This copy contains the entries from Vol IX, starting at Heraea (p. 403), but most is devoted to the entry for Heraldry, including detailed entries for the noble families of Britain. Bound in sewn paper wraps. Illustrated throughout with copper plates of heraldic shields and some related diagrams. This volume appears to also contain some insertions from the succeeding Vol X, and is maybe from the original owner's collection of the original part issues bound up. Rebound in later black faux leather, with new endpapers, five raised bands to spine, gilt title, 'Infallible Guide', to cover, and date, 1689. pp. [i], title, [iv], imprimatur, [v-vi], contents, 132. A scarce copy of Hooper's second work, an apologetic in defence of the Anglican Church. Hooper had a more than accomplished academic record, being elected a scholar at St Paul's School, and subsequently granted a King's Scholarship at Westminster School. At Oxford he excelled in mathematics, while also learning good Hebrew and Syriac alongside Greek and Latin. In 1680 he was appointed chaplain to King Charles II. Subsequently made Bishop of Bath and Wells from 1704 to 1727. All of Hooper's works were published anonymously. A very good copy with some marking to boards including fading to rear cloth, a few dimples to front board, else a clean, tight copy. Contents focused on countryside, agricultural actvities and growing methods, etc.

Wrexham: R. Hughes A'i Fab [and Son], ND. Full-Leather. Near Fine. No date, but the preface is dated 1868. A beautiful leather bound, gilt decorated pocket sized Welsh hymnal, in fine condition. Uncommon for Welsh hymnals of this or any period, in a country where austerity and restraint in religious artefacts was the prevailing instinct, it is bound in a reddish brown morocco or possibly scored calf with very pretty gilt decoration. Front and rear cover with the same gilt fillets, with embossed title set within a gilt decoration, and repeated embossed details within these ruled borders. Four gilt compartments to spine, with gilt patterns - no raised bands. All edges gilt. Previous owner's name [Miss Catherine Bevan] inscribed in a neat copperplate, dated August 20, 1876 to 2nd ffep. With 555 hymns in Welsh and 18 in English. No notation, but with an extensive subject index at the start. Unpaginated. Faintly rubbed to extremities, a fine copy. 12mo, 4" x 5-3/4".

Being an Elegant Collection of the Most Delightful Little Stories and Interesting Tales, Chiefly Translated from that much Admired Work L'Ami Des Enfants. With 74 Cuts, Designed and Engraved on wood by I. [John] Bewick. One of the most successful compilations for children produced in the period, with several editions. This one further enhanced by the charming engravings and vignettes of John Bewick, younger brother of Thomas. pp. (8), 271. 12mo, 7" x 4-1/2". Bound in full polished calf, neatly rebacked, corners strengthened. The tp has a series of very small cuts along part of its top edge with a lesser number to the following leaf. Faint traces of childish doodles to front endpapers, a touch of browning to prelims, else a firm, tight copy, pages clean and crisp and in very good condition.

London: Printed and Sold by H. Hills, in Black-fryars, near the Water-side. For the Benefit of the Poor, 1708. The Second Edition. Disbound. Good +/ vg-. pp. 24. 8vo, small stapled pamphlet, 4" x 7-1/8". A few small worm trails to margin by page edges, which do not effect text, edge of spine darkened, otherwise, a clean, firm copy. Sacheverell, a Tory, was an important figure in High Anglican circles of the time and lent his name to the riots of 1710, after his sermons had led to attacks on Non-Conformists. In similar vein, this text includes a staunch defence of the Established Church.

London / Birmingham: Longman And Co, Paternoster Row / J Drake, New Street, Birmingham, ND. First edition. Pamphlet. Very Good. pp. 80, + fold-out table, Expenditure of a Working Man. Disbound slim pamphlet in very good condition, some fraying around spine, some turning to a few page corners at bottom, but a clean, firm copy with sound binding. The TP lists Frederick Hill as the author, not Frederic as he was baptised. Hill was one of the most notable Victorian prison reformers and politically involved throughout his career, including working towards the Reform Bill of 1832. The pamphlet would have been written just prior to Hill joining the Birmingham Political Union, which campaigned for the extension of the vote. His brother Rowland, inventor of the postage stamp, had an equally illustrious career. To tp, in a Victorian hand, in pencil, 'First Composition in print by Frederic Hill' and in ink, the date 1828. Privately Printed, 1868. First Edition. Softcover. Good. A Lecture delivered in the Town Hall, Cambridge on March 30, 1868. Printed in Ayr. pp. 60. Stitched booklet, (9" x 5-1/2"), bright emerald green printed wraps, printed title to cover. Wraps darkened and discoloured to margins, more so to front cover with some light spotting, light edgewear. Pages uncut to top edges and hence internally fine. Macmillan was the co-founder of the publishing house of Macmillan; he and his brother had initially established a business as a bookshop in Cambridge. An interesting, far ranging disquisition on contemporary American society, social mores, ethics, abolition, commerce, religion, politics and science based on Macmillan's frequent visits. SCARCE in this original edition.

Brigstocke in Victorian hand to flyleaf. Worn to spine ends, with small loss, boards have suffered some water damage with bubbling to overlay to front and back, front gutter cracked, binding cocked. The water damage does not penetrate to text block. Binding still firm and holding, and internally, pages are clean and free of marks or foxing.
