Inscribed and signed and designated the "first copy" by the author on the front free endpaper: "This first copy belongs to the first subscriber, Newbury Frost Read, Esq., who is first in many things, including the sincere regard of the bibliographer, Royce". Slightly agetoned, slight wear to corner-tips, otherwise Very Good. Newbury Frost Read (1887-1950) was a New York real estate agent and noted collector of Dickens.

A lengthy and scholarly introduction covers in 11 chapters the author's detailed classification of modern Japanese literature by subjects and themes. This is followed by the bibliography, which lists the works of some 451 representative authors alphabetically by author. An author index gives references for the introduction as well as the bibliography. Slight wear to head and tail of backstrip, otherwise Near Fine in the original publisher's carton, which is a little torn at some edges but otherwise Good.
