Description:
Macmillan & Bowes, Cambridge, first edition, 1890. 1 of 500 numbered and signed small paper-copies from a total edition limited to 600 copies. Modern black half-calf and boards, spine gilt, fore-edge untrimmed, large 4to, 30 cm,. xv, 530 pp, ills. Remains the standard reference for early Scottish printing. Includes bibliographic descriptions of 333 books, many of which are illustrated with facsimiles (some in red and black). A contemporary review noted: "..the Scottish printers between 1507 and 1601 numbered scarcely more than a dozen in all, and it has, therefore, been possible for their historians to enrich their chronicle with a wealth of detail... Of the manner in which our two authors have executed their task it is difficult to speak too highly. As a rule three chapters are devoted to each printer, the first dealing with his biography, the second with his dated works, and the third with those sine anno. Of the earliest books, such as the Aberdeen Breviary, the collations frequently… Read More

Description:
British Library, London / Oak Knoll, New Castle, 2001 reprint in one volume of the 1880-86 first edition. Cloth, 8vo,. 1070 pp. From the blurb: "In the long and distinguished history of bibliographical scholarship, few works stand equal to E.C. Bigmore and C.W.H. Wyman's monumental classic, A Bibliography of Printing. The original three volumes were published from 1880 to 1886 by the famed British bookman and publisher, Bernard Quaritch. This ground-breaking catalogue of the literature of printing quickly established itself as the premier bibliography in its field. Beautifully illustrated ..hundreds of original woodcuts depicting portraits, printers' marks, topographical scenes, and foliated initials graced many of its thousand-plus pages. Unlike many of its unannotated predecessors, Bigmore and Wyman's analytical descriptions gave a unique and strong-willed voice to this well-researched book. The original work contained one major drawback; it lacked a comprehensive index. In this… Read More

From a contemporary review: "This is a study of the printers' ornaments used by the William Bowyers, father and son, between 1699 and 1777, such ornaments being relief cuts. There are reproductions of 319 ornaments, virtually the entire Bowyer stock, and four of their publishers' devices. Notes are provided and appendices list the ornaments by size and in chronological order. Tables show the numbers and kinds of ornaments, new ornaments and total stock annually from 1705 to 1777 and the maximum length and frequency of use for each class of ornament. The reproductions are approximately the same size as the originals. The author has also provided an analytical and descriptive introduction..". Oxford Bibliographical Society. Oxford Bibliographical Society, Oxford, first edition, 1984. Printed wrappers, 4to, 25 cm,. 70 pp. Approximately 300 entries. From the blurb: "Professor McKenzie's study of the Cambridge University Press in the time of Queen Anne gives a detailed picture of the Press in this period. As the first study in depth of a hand-press house, it provides an essential basis for much bibliographical and textual work in early printed books. The Press records on which the work is based form, in their detail and comprehensiveness, a unique collection of printing-house documentation. The entries in the Curator's Minute Book provide the fullest extant account of printing charges in these years; the Annual Press Accounts show clearly the kind of expenditure which a small printing-house incurred; and many of the Vouchers reveal the week-by-week… Read More
