Description:
A really entertaining telling of the history of the Allan clan and early Vermont. Many outside of the state do not know Vermont is the 14th state because it refused to join the other 13 and was an independent nation for awhile after the Revolution. Nor that both New York and New Hampshire (and Canada) at various times wanted to absorb it into their states. Ethan and his brothers (notably Ira) were the main reason behind keeping Vermont independent, masterfully playing the rough game of colonial politics as amusingly recounted in this book. It does fade at the end, mainly because (spolier!) Ethan, the most outrageous of the bunch, dies, and Ira's last years took place outside of Vermont and thus were hastily told. Overall though a very enjoyable read. The Stephen Green Press, First Edition, #s' line 1-76. Very Good, solid, clean text, no writing, light soiling at head and fore-front. DJ Very Good, three small closed tears. Front flap clipped. A Very interesting read.

Bruce Gold, a middle-aged, Jewish professor of English literature, finds himself on the brink of a golden career in politics -- and not a moment too soon, as Gold yearns for an opportunity to transform a less-than-picture-perfect life: His children think little of him, his intimidating father endlessly bullies him, and his wife is so oblivious that she doesn't even notice he's left her. As funny as it is sad, Good as Gold is a story of children grown up, parents grown old, and friends and lovers grown apart -- a story that is inimitably Heller.Simon & Schuster, January 1,1979. The Idiot is a novel by the 19th-century Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky. It was first published serially in the journal The Russian Messenger in 1868–9. The title is an ironic reference to the central character of the novel, Prince (Knyaz) Lyov Nikolaevich Myshkin, a young man whose goodness and open-hearted simplicity lead many of the more worldly characters he encounters to mistakenly assume that he lacks intelligence and insight. Returning to Russia from a sanitarium in Switzerland, the Christ-like epileptic Prince Myshkin finds himself enmeshed in a tangle of love, torn between two...Heritage Club Edition, copyright 1956-1984 Heritage Press. "Mr. Deck, are you my stinkin' Daddy?" In a furious phone call from T.R., the daughter he's never met, Danny Deck gets the jolt of his life. A TV writer who's retired to his Texas mansion, Danny spends his days talking to the answering machines of his ex-lovers from New York to Paris and dreaming of the characters in the sitcom he's created. But suddenly, a hurricane called T.R. is storming into his life... In his most moving and richly comic contemporary novel since Texasville, Larry McMurtry returns to the modern West he created so masterfully in The Last Picture Show and Terms of Endearment. Some Can Whistle spins a tale of Hollywood glitz and Texas grit; of an extraordinary young woman and a murderous young man; and of a middle-aged millionaire running head-on into the longings, joys, and pathos of real life.Book is near mint, solid clean, bright, no writing, no bumping, with Very good dj so shelf wear no tears, colors
