Handy Book began as a paperback exchange in 1974 on Yonge Street in North Toronto. In 1977 my mother assumed ownership of the small store and in 1982, I opened a second location on Avenue Road about a mile away. Over the years, the Avenue Road store sold both new and used books and both paperback and hardcovers. In 1992, we closed the Yonge Street location and moved that stock to Avenue Road as I moved to a 7500-square-foot basement warehouse in Thornhill, just north of Toronto. In 2009, the warehouse was closed by a vindictive landlord and I again assumed the day-to-day activities of the Avenue Road store. With 29 years in the book business and with a lifetime love of books, I guarantee that anything shipped will arrive in the same condition that it left here. We know how people revere their books and we take extra-special care in wrapping and parcelling them. When in Toronto please drop in to visit the store. We're open Mondays to Saturdays from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm and on Sundays and Holidays from noon to 8:00 pm. This actually is our second bookstore online. Our first one was in a New Orleans suburb called Chalmette, and was washed out to sea, with Hurricane Katrina, on August 29, 2005. We are now located in the Mississippi Delta 325 miles from the coast. And if floods here, from a hurricane; God have mercy on us all!

If there is one thing I learned in the antique business for 30+ years was that good looking merchandise sells, trash doesn’t…. Our Store is by e-commerce only… This is a full time occupation after retirement… …. Having once owned an antique shop and Mail order company, I place the value of good service; prompt shipping of goods, and good descriptions, above that almighty dollar. All our books and items offered for sale are in good condition or better. … I DO NOT offer for sale items that are in poor condition, or overly soiled.... torn or ripped, missing pages, etc… soiled, mildewed.. Dog or kid chewed… As a general rule, I do not sell book club edition, and when I do they are clearly marked… and then only if they are older and scarcer or of quality. I list all items for $2.95 and up … If they aren’t worth this, they are donated to nursing homes, charitable originations, churches and libraries … Thus they never are seen in these listings. There are quite a few first edition novels in like new condition being offered for $2.95… I try to price Items at a fair price, I believe in value for service.
