Located on Seattle's Capitol Hill, Spine and Crown was the brainchild of the late railway magnate T.J. Hulme. Worried that his legacy would amount to no more than eternal noisome to-ing and fro-ing, he dedicated his final years to establishing an institution where learning was valued above all and where he could retire of an evening with a glass of port and have a pipe in peace.
