Located on Seattle's Capitol Hill, Spine and Crown was the brainchild of the late railway magnate T.J. Hulme. Worried that his legacy would amount to no more than eternal noisome to-ing and fro-ing, he dedicated his final years to establishing an institution where learning was valued above all and where he could retire of an evening with a glass of port and have a pipe in peace. His spirit lives on at Spine and Crown, where knowledge comes at a price, but usually a fairly reasonable one.

I owned an independent general bookstore in Charleston S.C. {Chapter Two Bookstore} for almost twenty years. I have been an avid reader all of my life so when I opened my own bookstore in 1983, I felt like a kid in a candy store. Every time a shipment arrived, it felt like Christmas morning. Just looking at those beautiful books just made me so excited to have the opportunity to enjoy them and share them with customers.
