First section, title, followed by 30 pages, with two plate designs per page on all but two pages, for a total of 58 plate designs from the Revolutionary Period in France. Second section; title, followed by 18 pages, most with a single design. Third section: title, followed by 30 pages, with many marks shown, and the cursive text, in a calligraphic hand. Artist is anonymous. We presume the initials on lower spine of A. G. are those of the artist and creator of this album. The artist here was working essentially in the realm of miniature painting, at which he clearly excelled. Facing the plates, on the tissue guards, are explanatory notes. The styles presented were probably intended to inspire costumes for fancy dress balls, then the rage. Now, as surely then, the figures can tickle and delight us, and this album is far less ponderous than the encyclopaedic tomes on costume such as Racinet or fashion periodicals of the period. London: Jones & Cuthbertson, 1878. First Edition. Decorated Cloth. Very Good. A quirky, present-time take on the Book of Revelations and its apocalyptic prophecies, with imagery that is minutely conceived, detailed, and paradoxically, rather cheery notwithstanding its grim intent. The work might fairly be categorized as an emblem book. Given the highly symbolic nature of Revelations, even to the literalist, this is scarcely a stretch. In terms of actual content, the book purports to predict events that will befall mankind in the near future -- four years into the future from 1878 and the Congress of Berlin as a starting date. To what degree the author actually believed in the predictions is open to question, although there can be no doubt that she did believe in fundamental truths informing the predictions, and the intricate marshalling of her points suggests ardent conviction. She was the second wife, married in 1917. he was made a Marquess in 1921. 20 handcolored steel engravings (full page plates) and many other illustrations. Considerable shelfwear to decorated boards, with corners rubbed, some chipping to spine tips, etc. Writing and picture on boards fairly bright. Inside, some scattered foxing, with most pages clean. Both volumes with weak front inner hinges. Volume 1 preliminary pages detached and need to be tipped in. Overall, good.

Condition: calf rubbed along joints, with a touch of starting, front cover, vol. 2. Some rubbing of spine. Top band of vol. 2 front cover has sunning. Light foxing of prelims in both volumes, but generally pages are clean, as are the plates. Overall, a handsome set.

Aymer de Valance plate, or half title plate of second volume, credited to Pugin. Bindings are both tight. Spines rebacked. Calf vibrant and healthy re boards, excepting some edgewear, with small spot of calf worn through on vol 1. Some bumping of corners w/ also calf worn through in some corners. Spines have suffered dryness and cracking, but original spines preserved and mounted in rebacking. Bright gilding on calf boards. Plates are by and large clean. Considerable offsetting of plates. Otherwise, text pages are generally clean, with a few pages with foxing in volume 2.

Rare, unusual paint company promotional and customer aid tool with 22 color plates which one can scroll up or down with two side roller handles. Houses are generally rather grand shingle houses such as one finds still in old upscale (and formerly upscale) suburban communities or old-time seaside resorts such as line the New Jersey shore. The houses today are widely known by the over-general label of Victorian, or just slightly more specificet also somewhat inaccurately, as Queen Anne-style homes, but regardless, have sprawl, a charming assymmetry, large windows promising sun-drenched rooms, and expansive porches or verandahs typically. N.d., circa 1890s. The oak box measures about 40 cm in height, 46 cm wide, and about 13 cm deep. The window, which reveals the scroll's panels in the front, is an oblong 29 by 37 cm, and of course, these are the dimensions of the individual panels. Lovely, and fairly scarce, poetry anthology of the poems of the author of arguably the first English cookbook on domestic cooking -- Modern Cookery for Private Families -- which came out 16 years after this poetry collection was issued. 8vo. 178 by 112 mm. xx, 140 pp. Ten pages of the prelims devoted to a list of subscribers! Condition: Spine label chipped and darkened, making the surviving printed letters on it almost illegible. Cloth fabric spine also somewhat soiled, perhaps sunned, somewhat tired in appearance. Paper pastedown boards heavily stained, some minor surface loss, and top edge with a small bite out of it. Scattered foxing, with leaves ranging from moderately foxed, to lightly so, to clean. A few leaves with dog-eared corners.

Circa 1920s. 148, [1] pp. With 9 tipped-in color plates featuring Arlecchino, Brighella, etc. Interconnected tales inspired by and relating to the Commedia dell'Arte. The plates are of vivid color and full of panache. Nominally juvenalia, these illustrations and accompanying text are even more likely to ingratiate themselves to adults, especially those intrigued by masques and the Venetian Carnavale. Interspersed with the Italian is Venetian and Bergamasco dialect. Montedoro, the illustrator, is an unjustly forgotten or neglected artist (to our knowledge). Unpaginated, 26 leaves, with 22 chromolithographic plates. Light verse, deriving much of its humor in the heavily accented English, full of malapropisms, of the eponymous character, a German immigrant. Leaves of a fairly heavy card stock. First leaf cracked along the hinge.

An outstanding copy of this blistering satire of Washington politics during the Gilded Age. 12mo. 17 by 12 cm. 374, [12] pp. Condition: the book itself has foxing on cover, mostly affecting front cover. Spine darkened from soiling. Cloth worn in corners and spine extremities. Pages within clean, if moderately age toned. Lower corner of FFEP, which has publisher's catalogue ad, is cut out, with some loss of content. This cut out loss is about two inches by 1.25 inches at greatest length and height, with loss affecting two listed books. The modern clamshell box is in fine condition, with no issues.
