New York: Imago, 1984. First. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. 4to.  144 pp.  Hardcover in dustjacket. The artist has inscribed "To Paul McMahon with good wishes on the occasion of our first meeting / Paul Cadmus / 23 July 1992" in black ink to the title page.  Slightest toning to extremities of jacket's edges, price clipped.  Fiine in a near fine dust jacket. An interesting work on the artist by Lincoln Kirstein, the American writer, impresario, art connoisseur, and cultural figure in New York City who, with George Balanchine, founded the New York City Ballet (first known as the "Ballet Society") in 1948. "Paul Cadmus is best known for his erotic depictions of nude male figures, charged with satire, social criticism, and a strongly idealized sexuality.  Cadmus first gained recognition for his 1934 painting The Fleet's In, where the controversy of a group of sailors he pictured carousing among prostitutes and homosexuals inspired a public outcry.  His work is informed by themes of Surrealism,… Read More

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Signed portrait of the American painter and graphic artist by Virginia Schendler for Midtown Payson Galleries, New York.  Inscribed to  Paul McMahon.  No date.  Label with credits mounted to verso.  Square frame (7 x 7 inches) printed to oblong 8-by-10-inch (25.7 x 20.2 cm) photo paper.  Inscription slightly smudged, else in fine condition. The picture shows Cadmus in his late years.  Widely known for his egg tempera paintings of gritty social interactions in urban settings, he also produced many highly finished drawings of single nude male figures.  His paintings combine elements of eroticism and social critique in a style often called magic realism. From the collection of Paul McMahon, a critic, photographer and artist who worked for more than 13 years touring with Marlene Dietrich as the icon's stage manager, announcer, dresser, secretary and escort, and later spent 25 years as an arts and entertainment reviewer and photographer with Gay Community News,… Read More

Description:
Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Original drawing in ballpoint pen in blue on wove paper, accomplished and signed by John Cage, Allan Kaprow, Al Hansen, and Wolf Vostell as well as dated 1986 by Al Hansen. The outline of the face, eyes and nose appear to be accomplished by Cage, whose signed name "John Cage" constitutes the nostrils, beneath which Allan Kaprow's name composes a mustache over a mouth, while the figure's hair is clearly accomplished by Hansen, whose name and title outline the head "Al Hansen Kunstlaboratorium Köln." In a lighter, rather faded ink, "Vostell" forms the right eye. Previously exhibited in "The Art of Collecting" at the Museum Kunst Palast Düsseldorf Foundation, 2007. In fine condition.  7.8 x 10.5 inches (26 x 19.5 cm).  In 1957 Al Hansen enrolled in John Cage's composition class at The New School. He had no prior knowledge of music, but this class became a catalyst for a community of artists performing and sharing ideas and provided the foundation for his later… Read More

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Vintage pearl-finish Piccagliani photo of Callas as she appeared in Un Ballo in Maschera at La Scala 1957, signed with her name alone in blue fountain pen across the image.  In fine condition, moderate contrast to some of the signature and mounting remnants to verso. 3.75 x 5.5 inches; 9.4 x 13.7 cm. Amelia is a role that should probably have figured more in Callas's career. She sang excerpts as a student, almost got to sing it at La Scala under Toscanini, but actually didn't tackle the whole role until the recording she made under Antonino Votto in 1956, and after singing it in a lavish new production at La Scala the following year, never sang it again, though she returned to Amelia's two big solos in the studio in the mid to late 1960s.

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. A rare and amusing postcard printed with a joke about the 1906 scandal surrounding the great tenor. Printed on the cover is the question "Where did Caruso touch the lady?"; a window in the cover opens to show a monkey in a cage with the punchline, "In the monkey house." Overall toning; two slight splits to the fold and a small tear at the corner of the window flap; otherwise in very good condition overall. 3.25 x 5.5 inches (8.5 x 14.3 cm).In November of 1906, Caruso had been charged with an indecent act allegedly committed in the monkey house of New York's Central Park Zoo, where he was accused of pinching the bottom of a married woman. Caruso claimed a monkey did the bottom-pinching, but he was found guilty as charged and fined 10 dollars. The so-called Monkey House Incident, with the complicated court case that followed, caused a huge scandal, with particular outrage among New York's high-society opera-goers.
