A splendid account of this railway whose interest is hugely increased by the mass of elaborate charts and illustrations, which in many ways prefigure the use of isotypes a few years later. 1934. EDEL, Nico. Una visita a Cinzano. 44 pp., illustrated throughout. Folio, 320 x 265 mm., bound in original illustrated wrappers in a new cloth folding box. [Milano, Alfieri & Lacroix]: N.d., [1934 or 1936]. A spectacular and rare piece of Italian book design under fascism, but without the usual heavy hand of Mussolini, presumably because it was done as an advertisement. The overall layout is imaginative and makes extensive use of photomontage. The overall effect is reminiscent of the publications issued by Maison Nicolas, the French purveyor of wines. First edition, with definitions of the early 20th-century art movements (the "isms") in German, French, and English, and illustrated by reproductions of representative artworks. The striking cover and constructivist layout were designed by Lissitzky. An unusually fine copy of a book which is almost never found with the original spine intact, as here. First and only edition of Byrne's Euclid, surely one of the most remarkable Victorian books. These Mondrian-like designs of bold, primary colours are printed in faultless register, and the striking composition on the page is unique in bookmaking.
