Harriet M. Welsh and Beth Ellen Hanson, of HARRIET THE SPY fame, return to the page for a summer in the sleepy beachside community of Water Mill. Beth Ellen takes center stage in this story as she copes with getting her first period, as well as the awkwardness and obsessive introspection that becoming a teenager often brings. At the same time, the arrival of Zeeny, her shallow, self-involved mother, creates emotional agony unlike anything Beth Ellen has ever experienced. Meanwhile, Harriet finds herself getting caught up in the mystery of who is leaving nasty notes--which often contain shrewd observations about the character traits and behavior of the receiver--all over town. Determined to catch the culprit, Harriet drags Beth Ellen along as her unwilling assistant to spy on absolutely everyone. This keen examination of pre-adolescent feelings also includes a discussion of menstruation that was highly unusual for children's literature when the novel was first published in 1965.
