Description:
London: R. Cotes, 1648.. [10],220,[12]pp. Small folio. 19th-century three-quarter red morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. Bookplate of Edward Ayer on front pastedown. Light dampstaining to lower half of text. About very good. Important collector and bibliographer Edward Ayer's copy of the first edition of one of the most celebrated travel books of its day. Gage was an Englishman raised in Spain. He entered the Dominican Order and set out for the New World, traveling by way of the Philippines and across the Pacific. He spent most of the next twelve years in Central America, the West Indies, Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Panama. When he finally returned to England and converted to the Church of England, he wrote this book to urge British seizure of the Spanish empire in America. Since the Spanish had jealously guarded foreign access to their dominions, this was the first detailed description to reach Europe of the regions visited by Gage, and it was widely reprinted and translated. Description:
[N.p., but likely Washington, 1813. Broadside, 11 1/2 x 18 inches. Large woodcut seal of the United States in upper blank margin. Backed with tissue paper. Light fold lines, light foxing. Good. Expertly matted, and protected with Mylar sheet. This copy bears the faint signature in the lower margin of patentee Luther Gale. A broadside announcement of James Madison's granting of a patent for the improvement of the bark mill to Luther Gale. The bark mill was of vital importance to tanners, since the bark was used in the tanning process. The broadside has a handsome woodcut version of the Great Seal of the United States. It was Madison, along with Charles Pinckney, who introduced the first U.S. patent law during the 1787 Constitutional Convention. Rare. Not in Rink nor on OCLC, although Rink does locate another Gale "bark mill" broadside.

Description:
Montreal: Printed by William Gray, 1814.. 45pp. Original plain blue wrappers bound into later three-quarter morocco, gilt, and marbled boards. Morocco a bit worn, flyleaf and front wrapper detached. Very good. "Six papers, dated 1813-14, apparently related to affairs in Ireland about the time of Earl Fitzwilliam's administration, 1794- 95; they are in reality a skillful satire on Sir George Prevost's administration in Canada, 1812-14. Gale, the son of an English colonial official, became a lawyer in 1808 and was a judge in the Court of King's bench in Montreal, 1834-38. During the political controversies of the period, he was active in expressing the viewpoint of the English minority of the province" - TPL. LANDE 258. TPL 986.

Description:
Philadelphia: Mathew Carey, 1801. 72,[5]pp. Contemporary plain wrappers, sewn, contemporary manuscript title on front wrapper. Wrappers chipped, foxed, with a bit of staining. A few leaves lightly creased, mild occasional foxing, minor stain to top edge. Overall very good. Unopened and untrimmed. Noted as the "second edition" on the titlepage, after the first of the same year. Gallatin wrote this pamphlet just as he was entering the office of Secretary of the Treasury, a post he held until 1813, the longest tenure of any Secretary. This work lays out the path he intended to follow, which he succeeded in doing, at least until the embargo and the War of 1812 upset his plans. A penciled note on the titlepage identifies this copy from the library of Richard Alsop, a federal era Connecticut writer and anti-Jeffersonian contributor to the ECHO. SHAW & SHOEMAKER 553. Lists forty-three paintings, mostly portraits of New England worthies, many associated with Yale. The majority of the entries are accompanied by biographical remarks upon the subjects, with some notes on the painters, copyists, and provenance. Other American painters represented in the collection at this early date are Mouldrop, the Earls, Jennys, and numerous examples by Jocelyn and S.F.B. Morse. The Yale Art Gallery, founded when John Trumbull donated more than 100 paintings of the American Revolution to the college in 1832, is the oldest university museum gallery in the western hemisphere. Description:
London: G. Wilki, 1781. [4],157,[2]pp. Half title. Modern blue wrappers. Internally clean. Very good. Second London edition, with additions, after the very rare New York printing of 1777 (most copies of that edition were destroyed by a New York mob) and the first London edition of 1780. Galloway, former Loyalist "Superintendent" of Philadelphia during the British occupation of 1777-78, herein replies to Gen. Howe's OBSERVATIONS..., preaching to him on how he could have won the war. In spite of its combative tone, the pamphlet does provide important details on the Revolution in 1777-78, the nature of the countryside, etc. Galloway attacks Howe's claim that he was forced to fight in forests by stating that at least two-thirds, and in many places five-sixths, of the terrain in question was cleared farmland.
