Printed the same year as the first Russian separate edition (Moscow, 1956). "In 1955, after a period of sixteen years in which there were no new translations of Hemingway and no reprints, The Old Man and the Sea was published in the magazine Inostrannaia literatura. The story created a sensation among Soviet readers; once more Hemingway was their favorite living American author. No doubt he had never lost first place in the hearts of many of them, but now the official sanction of an appearance in print made it possible to admire him openly again ..." This is the first edition of the play The Fifth Column and anthology of the writings by Ernest Hemingway (first published in 1938). The original edition was of forty-nine stories which was also the title. A few less sufficient stories were not included in this edition and two essays on the Spanish Civil War were added (written in 1937 and 1938) as well as the last written story On the American Dead in Spain (1939). The Spanish Civil War strengthened Hemingway's reputation and authority in USSR. In 1930s everyone knew he was writing a new novel (For Whom the Bell Tolls), a great amount of fans were waiting for a new book. But the translation came only 28 years later because 1930s were the years of increasing vigilance and intolerance to ideological 'flaws' of Western writers. Nevertheless this play and stories were published a year after the original publication. WorldCat locates only one copy in University at Albany Library.

Tbilisi: Sovetskaya Gruziya, 1961. 477, [4] pp.: ill. 8vo. Original illustrated cardboards. The design of the boards and the illustrations in text are by a collective of three illustrators: O. Kochakidze, A. Slovinski and I. Chikvaidze. The boards are slightly rubbed at the edges. pp. 199-200 are torn with minimum of text missing. The first edition of the first translations of these two Hemingway novels into Georgian. This translation by the classic Georgian translator, Vakhtang Chelidze, remains the only one to the language. This book was re-published in 1976 and 2011. Vakhtang Chelidze (1917-2005) was one of the main translators from English to Georgian in the post-WWII era. His first work was translating Romeo and Juliet to Georgian in 1945; in 1967 he became the head of the important Georgian publishing house which printed this book - "Sovetskaya Gruzia" ("Soviet Georgia").

One of 8000 copies. This is a collection of Hemingway's stories published along with an article by Ivan Kashkin, the major propagandist of his works who also coordinated work of 11 translators. This book was named after 'Death in the Afternoon' but included just a short piece from chapter 12. The USSR willingly accepted Hemingway as an anti-fascist writer and translated his works since 1934. The stories started to appear in magazines and this book was promptly published as well. The edition consisted of chapters from four books: 'In Our Days', 'Men Without Women', ''Death in the Afternoon' and 'Winner Take Nothing'.
