London: Faber, 1945. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. A very good copy of a fifth impression of a scarce title (especially since P. D. James mentioned it as a favorite and best ever British legal crime novel). The first impression was issued in 1942 and this fifth printing was issued in 1945. The pages are very thin, indicative of wartime publishing standards. Yellow cloth boards show some wear and grime, and page block is tanned. A couple pages were turned down in the past, and page 27 has a tear that does not continue to the edge - about 3 inches in length but closed and with no loss to text. All of our first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted. Dustwrappers are protected with clear archival wraps and we pack each book like it's a Tiffany egg.
