First edition. Original grey-blue cloth black titles and design of a swooping bat to front board. 274pp plus 2pp rear adverts, lower and fore edges untrimmed. Most likely the true first issue as dated catalogues were inserted from September onwards, all the way through into 1912. These 1911 first editions without catalogues were probably ready before the catalogue was, and were perhaps even intended as review copies. Original orange cloth with black spine and front cover titles. 172pp, seven pull page plates by Gilbert James. Stamped "Presentation Copy" and bearing the initials "EFB" (in Benson's hand) to the title page. Loosely inserted, a small calling card bearing the signature "E.F. Benson". The book is has a small faint mark to the front cover and both endpapers facing the pastedowns are acid-toned, else a sharp fine copy.
