His art—particularly in its worked and layered surfaces weathered by time and nature—is a visceral and poetic consideration of the past as a means to understand our collective present and, by implication, our future. His monumental series of works, both in sculpture and paint, Morgenthau Plan reference a plan, devised by U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau during World War II, to destroy Germany's factories and turn the country into farmland after the Allied victory. In these works, Kiefer imagined this pastoral outcome, with postwar Germany… Read More

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Etching with Drypoint, 1893, posthumous ed. unknown, printed circa 1960s. Kl. 19 Vlb, unsigned, with the A.V.D. Becke Munchen-22 dry stamp lower right, final state, plate 9-15/16 x 5-3/16, image 9-3/8 x 4-7/16, pale hint of lightening within mat opening, printed in a warm black ink on thick cream wove paper. A fine late impression with rich contrasts of this early image by Kollwitz. Otto Nagel, the author of a book on Kollwitz's self portraits, has stated that the artist observed this woman first hand, but in making the print made this a self portrait. A. von der Becke became Kollwitz's print publisher after 1931, and after von der Becke's death in 1958, his wife Johanna and son Bernhard continued the publication of prints from Kollwitz's plates from 1963-1972, with which this impression is consistent. Considered one of Germany's most important early 20th-century artists, Käthe Kollwitz captured the hardships suffered by the working class in drawings, paintings, and… Read More

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. An amusing large original drawing signed by the prolific New Yorker Cartoonist, showing eight different examples of his signature fuzzy creatures. Signed "Koren" in pencil to the lower right corner.  Light toning and wear along the edges; overall fine.  30.25 x 22.25 inches (77 x 56.5 cm.).The New Yorker officially accepted one of his cartoons in 1962, establishing the beginning of Koren's career. Since, thousands of his drawings and cartoons have been published in The New Yorker. When asked about the inspiration for his furry creatures, Koren remarks, "during the late nineteen-sixties and early seventies, an avalanche of hirsutism and fuzziness took over the nation...Long hair, wild hairdos, exuberant facial appendages were everywhere as expressions of social rebellion, political revolt, and a general questioning of everything established." (The New Yorker, Ed Koren's Avalanche of Furriness).

A pristine early sepia postcard photograph of the young composer, signed in the blank lower margin with a four-bar AMQS with holograph title and lyrics from his operatic score based on symbolist Georges Rodenbach's phantasmagoric novel Bruges-la-morte. Composed by Korngold when he was just 23, its tremendous success heralded him as one of German opera's most promising talents. The photograph, a 1/2-length seated portrait by Madame d'Ora, shows Korngold in profile with head turned toward camera. On the verso is an ANS, signed "EWK," to Miss Katz, in German, sending thanks and warm greetings. 4 1/4x3 1/4 inches (image), 5 1/2x3 1/2 inches overall. Very fine. As nice as it gets!

At this time, Kreutzer wrote about 40 operas and numerous works for violin.
