Ukrderzhnatsmenvidav was an important piece of puzzle in early Soviet pan-republican indigenization program of 1920s and early 1930s. Active from 1926, Ukrderzhnatsmenvidav issued mostly books and periodicals in Yiddish, but also German, Greek, Polish, Czech, Estonian. Tbilisi: Zakgosizdat, 1934. 42 pp. 20.2x14.1 cm. In original illustrated publisher's wrappers. Loss of the pieces of the spine, tears to the wrappers, rubbed. Otherwise in good condition. Scarce. First edition. 1 of 1,000 copies. Edited by Professor K. Zavriev. One of the first Soviet works on the theory of calculating bridge vaults. This rare publication devoted to the theory of calculating bridge vaults was written by the Honored Worker of Science and Technology of the Armenian SSR and the Director of the Institute of Geophysics and Engineering Seismology of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR Armen Nazarov (1908-1983) in 1934. At the time, the issue of calculating arched bridges for the action of lateral horizontal forces (wind, seismic forces) was poorly studied and the book served as one of the first works on the subject matter. The edition, which was based on the examination conducted by the author at the Transcaucasian Institute of Structures (ZIS), consists of two main sections: The…

Description:
Leningrad: Raduga, 1927. 12 pp.: ill. 15x11,2 cm. In original illustrated wrappers. Tear of spine, some soiling and foxing, otherwise very good. First and only edition. Very rare little-format Raduga book. An early Soviet poetry book for younger children. It doesn't determine which of two sisters-artists, Elsa or Antonina Westfalen worked on this edition. Both contributed to the Russian book design occasionally and lived in Saint Petersburg/Leningrad. Elsa Westfalen (1876-1942) studied at the Central School of Technical Drawing of Baron Stieglitz with G. Kotov and V. Savinsky. She is known for designs of carpets, book bindings and illustrations, and watercolor landscapes. In 1932, Elsa was employed as an art historian in the Hermitage. Antonina Westfalen (1881-1942) studied at the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts under I. Bilibin, N. Roerich, A. Rylov. As her masters, she collaborated with Evreinov's Ancient Theater, designed books and bookplates. Together, Elsa and…

Description:
St. Petersburg: M. Stasyulevich, 1880. [8], 145, 207 pp. 21,5x14 cm. Original publisher's cloth with few bumps on the edges of the spine, but generally a very good copy. Extremely rare. No auction records found. The first separate edition of the poem which social resonance in Russian society is hard to compare to any literary piece at the time. The first part was published in the periodical 'Otechestvennye Zapiski' in 1869, and the different parts and variations appeared in periodicals throughout the 1870s. Nikolay Alexeevich Nekrasov (1821-1878) was a Russian poet who has revolutionized both the metrics of the Russian verse (many of the Silver Age poets have considered himself as their predecessor) and the agenda of the poetry itself - emphasizing the social importance and reflexion towards the fate of Russia. He was highly influential as the editor of the widely read periodicals like 'Sovremennik', and generally regarded by the radical and liberal opposition as its leader. Nekrasov started…

Description:
Moscow: Gosizdat, 1928. 92, [4] pp. 15Ñ…12 cm. In original illustrated wrappers. Slightly rubbed with minor fragments of the spine lost, water stains on verso of the covers, otherwise very good and clean internally. Third edition printed the same year as the second. Very rare. Lithographic cover design doesn't indicate any artist, but it is really impressive in showing workers' crowds against a background of factories. The little handbook is written on productive organization of mass performing in workers' clubs. It contains sheet music and lyrics for 34 "vigorous, revolutionary songs", as well as brief instruction on how to get together members of a meeting and make them sing after the event was held, along with participation of an art group and music ensembles. The book was composed by Soviet conductor and pedagogue Iosif Nemtsev (1885-1939). He had been arranging various choirs since the 1900s, including in schools and orphanages. He greatly influenced the Soviet choral music and promotion of the…

St. Petersburg: A. Benke, 1893. XVI, 353, (1) pp. + 29 tables. 8vo. Contemporary quarter-leather binding with gilt-lettering on the spine. Boards are slightly rubbed. Good condition. Rare. Nikolay Francevich Danielson (1844-1918) was a pivotal figure in Russian economic thought. He was responsible for the first translation of Karl Marx's Das Kapital in any language (published in Russian in 1872). Although he corresponded personally with Marx his own economic views were very different. Danielson was the leader of Russian liberal economic thought, but he undertook the translation of Marx to demonstrate that there was a third way of developing the Russian economy. He disagreed both with the official imperial policy of the time and with the Marxist alternative that was becoming very popular in Russia from the 1870s. Danielson famously stated: "The problem facing us could have been summed up in the following terms: What should we do to bring our industry up to the level of Western industry, in order to…

Moscow: Izdanie avtora, 1927. 36 pp.: ill. 18x13 cm. In original printed wrappers. In very good condition, minor fragment of the spine lost, pale water stain on the back cover. First and only edition. One of 5000 copies. The earliest manual on neutral technical fonts in the Soviet Union. In times of abundance of type designs published in special catalogues and manuals, draftsmen and industrial designers needed to use fonts lacking excess elements. They tended to use a simple and clear typeface. In 1919-1922, the German Standards Committee (DIN) outlined lettering standards for technical applications. The DIN typeface had no serifs or other details. It was accepted for technical purposes in the USSR following German, British, French and American practices. In Russian, it was called normal or standard typeface. The book showcases the Russian alphabet in these fonts, explains the construction of separate letters and methods of writing. The slope degrees, height and width of letters are indicated…

Description:
Moscow: Gizlegprom, 1933. 140 pp.: ill. 23x15,5 cm. In original constructivist cardboards by N. Sedel'nikov. Bumped, minor defects of covers, otherwise very good and neat. Signed and inscribed by the author "To M.A. Kaufman - a colleague in occupation. Moscow. November 20, 1933". Mikhail Kaufman (1897-1980) was a brother of Denis (known as Dziga Vertov) and Boris Kaufman. All the three dedicated themselves to cinematography and, in particular, motion picture experiments. Very rare handbook compiled by a self-taught camera operator Vladimir Nilsen (1906-1938) who was passionate about visual effects in cinematography from childhood. His path to the movie industry started in 1926, in emigration, when he had met Sergei Eisenstein on an invitation-only screening of 'Battleship Potemkin' in Germany. The following year Nilsen returned to the USSR and joined Eisenstein's staff making 'October' (Ten Days That Shook the World). Two years later Nilsen was blamed, exiled to the Russian North and taught…

Description:
Moscow: Iskusstvo, 1940. 48 pp., 32 ills. 18x15 cm. In original cloth folder with silver lettering and blind debossed silhouette: text brochure and separate illustration leaves inside. Folder is slightly soiled, small tear of the spine of the text brochure with minor tear of the t.p. outer edge, some foxing, otherwise very good and clean copy. First and only edition. Rare. Folder design by M. Vil'ker. One of three manuals on how to apply stage makeup compiled by Nikolai Novlianskii (1891-1966). He was an actor of Moscow Kamerny theater, a master of stage makeup. Apart from this handbook, he published two books in 1930 and 1945. The first one was an album 'Art of Makeup' and the size of this particular edition is much smaller. However, it contains extensive text explanations and a lot of illustrations. These model makeups were, probably, more useful as far as an actor could carry some separate leaves he really needed before a certain performance. It starts with a skull structure and face muscles.…
